Updated December 22,  9:03 AM EST  (clarifications concerning comp options)

Last update January 1st:

Welcome, judges!

On behalf of gamekeeperonline & Spellkeeper Events, I'd like to thank you for your interest in judging at Grand Prix Vancouver! The main event will take place on February 21-22, 2015, with Last Chance Grand Prix Trials being held on February 20th. The tournament will be held at the Vancouver Congress Centre. The format is Modern.

The Head Judge for Grand Prix Vancouver is Cristiana Dioniso, L4 from Italy.

We are planning on having lots of fun, meet old and new friends, work like crazy and bring all those fun experience home. But all this would not be possible without YOU! so please apply and perhaps you too can have fun with us!

Applications will be accepted until January 17th, 2014. If you have any questions or wish to apply after this deadline, please email Mauro Bongiovanni at magic2magic@sympatico.ca

First round of acceptance will be December 19th: Due to 2 GP's on the same weekend we are aware that some of you might want to attend either one. For this reason there will be at least 2 rounds of acceptance. Selected judges will be contacted no later than December 19th. The rest will be contacted on January 18th. We reserve the right to accept candidates at any moment before these dates. If you need a faster answers to make your travel plans do not hesitate to contact me directly.

Expectations

Judging is fun, but it’s also a lot of work. While working, judges may be expected to help with the following, and more:

-          Taking judge calls

-          Controlling the crowd

-          Providing customer service

-          Setting up/taking down tables, chairs, table cloths, pairings boards, table numbers

-          Picking up garbage

-          Pushing in chairs

-     Prize distribution

-     Attending to artists
-     Other administrative tasks deemed necessary

Dress code:

All staff members are expected to dress professionally throughout the weekend, with all clothing clean and neat.  Judges are expected to wear the Magic Judge shirt, dark undershirt, black belt, black pants, black socks, and black shoes.  Staff members in a judging role will adhere to the above dress guidelines. While working in a non-judging role Game Keeper Staff shirts will be provided as needed.

Accommodations

Room sponsorship is only available to L2+ judges. If you are an L2 judge, you must be available for all three days to receive room sponsorship.

If selected, you will be sharing a room with another judge for Friday and Saturday night. L3+ judges can receive sponsorship for one extra night as well, if requested in your application. L4+ judges will receive 4 nights sponsorship.

If you do not require room sponsorship or would like to arrange your own room but are eligible for it you may receive 1 additional box of product per night. Please specify in your application if you require us to take care of your room.

Volunteer just applies if you do not need room sponsorship. If you volunteer for the event it means you do not need room but you will still be eligible for normal comp.

Standby

Judges may apply to be a standby judge as well. Judges selected to be standby will receive free entry into the event (not including Sleep-in Special or VIP), but may be required to judge if attendance reaches a certain threshold. If activated, standby judges will receive the same compensation as other judges with a minimum of 108 packs per day.

All standby judges must be L2+, We will not be accepting L1 Judges as standby.

Compensation option #1

All judges will receive a $20 food stipend per day worked.

Judges also get the following base rate per day worked:

L1 judges will receive 36 packs of the latest Magic set

L2 judges will receive 72 packs of the latest Magic set

L3 judges will receive 108 packs of the latest Magic set

L4 judges will receive 144 packs of the latest Magic set

L5 judges will receive 180 packs of the latest Magic set

Additionally, the following bonuses will be offered: (bonuses not cumulative)

If the main event has 1200+ players, all judges will receive an extra 25% of their comp.

If the main event has 1500+ players, all judges will receive an extra 50% of their comp.

If the main event has 2000+ players, all judges will receive an extra 100% of their comp.

(These bonuses apply to all packs given out as compensation, for any/all tasks.)

Judges who volunteer (and are selected) to setup or teardown the event site on Friday morning or Sunday night respectively will receive an additional day's worth of base pay.

For example:

An L2 who is scheduled for Friday judging and scheduled for setup. She judges both Saturday and Sunday, and stays Sunday night to help with teardown. The event has 1600 players. She would receive 1.5 x (72 Base pay + 72 Setup) + 1.5 x (72) (for main event) + 1.5 x (72 Base pay + 72 teardown) = 540 boosters.

BONUS:

L3+ judges who judge at both GP Ottawa and GP Vancouver 2015 will also receive a $350 travel stipend to help offset costs. This stipend is payable at GP Vancouver.

Same bonus will apply for L3+ judges who judge at both GP Vancouver 2015 and GP Montreal 2015 (way to go infinite ;-P)

We are also looking for stage/staff duties

Please note, we are also looking for people to help with stage staff operations, such as side event registration/scorekeeping, product manager, customer service. If you are interested in pursuing that side of tournament operations, please answer "Yes" to the question and include some of your past experience and we will get in touch with you.

You can also choose to apply to scorekeep one day and judge two. This would be a great way to gain experience scorekeeping larger events.

Compensation for stage/staff is 1.5 display per level per day with a minimum of 3 displays per day

Stage/Staff in a management position will receive 2 displays per level per day with a minimum of 4 displays per day.

3 Nights hotel sponsorship also applies to Stage/staff working 3 days

Each judge will also receive a copy of the GP playmat.

Compensation option #2

This is straight flatlined comp easy and simple. No other compensation will be offered (food stipend, room sponsorship, attendance bonuses) with the exception of the L3 travel bonus which applies to both comps.

Level 2 judges: 4 booster displays per day worked

Level 3 judges: 6 booster displays per day worked

Level 4 judges: 8 booster displays per day worked

Level 5 judges: 10 booster displays per day worked

Stage staff will receive at least the same comp as a same level judge.

Each judge will also receive a copy of the GP playmat.

How to apply

In your application, please include the following:

-       Which days you are available to judge

-    Whether you can help with setup or teardown

-       Comp option

-       Primary phone number/e-mail address

-       Any special concerns/requirements

-      Would you be willing to do stage/staff duties for a day in addition to your 2 days judging duties?

               -       Whether you require a room or prefer product if comp number 1 is chosen

Thanks for applying, we hope to see you in Vancouver!

UPDATE From December 22:
Both compensation options are great and they address different needs.

Comp #1: is an all inclusive option, room sponsorship based on level (or a box if you dont need a room or want to book your own), food stipend and possible upside based on the number of players.

Comp #2: is a what you see is what you get option, perfect for judges who need to plan travel in advance and figure out expenses before making a decision to attend. Option 2 does not include anything else unless otherwise specified.

Things to keep in mind and needing clarifications:

L3 travel Bonus: 350$ bonus for L3+ judges who attended GP Ottawa and attending GP Vancouver will apply to BOTH comp options and the bonus will also apply for GP Montreal in the summer.

Staff/stage duties:
It's not because you volunteered for staff duties that you will be chosen, if you applied exclusively for stage duties and have not contacted me directly please do so as soon as possible. We will try to accomodate requests from judges who want to gain some experience on stage but the decision will be based on the tournament needs and attendance at the event.

Setup/Teardown:
These spots are very limited, setup team will be decided much closer to the event, tear down team will be announced at the event. These activities are not mandatory and if you do not wish to participate we wont force you. YOU SHOULD NOT BASE YOUR COMP DECISION BASED ON THESE ACTIVITIES AS THEY ARE NOT GUARANTEED but instead if it's something you will enjoying doing or not. The most experience you have the best chances you get.

Everybody gets a playmat regardless of the option chosen.
