The Head Judge for Grand Prix Toronto is Chris Richter.
The format of this event is Standard.
The event will be May 1 – 3, 2015. The event will be held in beautiful downtown Toronto at the Metro Toronto Convention Center.
We are looking for judges for Friday – Sunday. We will need judges for events starting at noon on Friday and 8:00 AM Saturday and Sunday. We expect Sunday to end around 10:00 PM.
We are NOT in need of stage staff for this event.
Applications will be accepted until March 31st, 2015. First round of acceptance will begin February 22, 2015. Grand Prix Toronto staff will be announced on, or before, April 7, 2015. Expectations
Judges at this Grand Prix are expected to prepare for the event by reviewing the Comprehensive Rules, Magic Tournament Rules, Infraction Procedure Guide, and Judging at Regular REL documents. These documents can be found at the Magic: The Gathering Document Center. Our expectation is for all staff members to act in a professional manner at all times.
Being on staff as a judge is more than making rulings. You may be asked to manage a line, push in chairs, clean trash off tables, hand out prizes, etc., etc. Flexibility is a necessity for judging.
Judges are expected to arrive in time and in appropriate attire to begin judging at the start of their assigned shifts. The Head Judge will be arranging main event shifts for Saturday and Sunday and Professional Event Services will assign side event shifts including the entire Friday schedule.
Judges at this Grand Prix will be in Magic Judge Program attire of Official Magic Judge shirt, black pants, black belt, and black shoes. You should select your shoes knowing that you will be on your feet a considerable portion of your shift. Judges when not on duty, should refrain from wearing Judge shirts. Once staff has been selected, there will be a forum thread posted with a way to request a Magic Judge shirt.
Compensation
All Judges will receive an exclusive Grand Prix participation mat from the event, one Grand Prix VIP/Side Event mat from the event as well as the following compensation program determined by their level:
Level 1 judges will receive $100.00 CDN and 1 booster display per day worked.
Level 2 judges will receive $160.00 CDN and 2 booster displays per day worked.
Level 3+ judges will receive $295.00 CDN and 4 booster displays per day worked.
Paperwork - Compensation
Administrative Policies – Billing Procedures
In Canada, it is our standard procedure that we do not issue payment for services until a valid invoice has been received. Invoices must indicate your name or business name, social insurance number/social security number or business number, address, and date in addition to the amount billed for services rendered.
Canadian Resident Subcontractors
For subcontractors who are HST registrants, we ask that your HST number be clearly indicated on your invoice in order to assist with HST compliance requirements.
Non-Canadian Resident Subcontractors
In order to comply with Canadian income tax legislation, we are required to withhold income tax on any amounts paid to a non-resident of Canada for services rendered in Canada at a rate of 15% unless a waiver is provided (see below).
Regulation 105 Waiver
Non-resident self-employed individuals and corporations can complete a Regulation 105 waiver in order to apply for a reduction in tax withheld on services provided in Canada. To qualify for this, you must meet one of the following conditions:
• US resident individuals who earn less than $5,000 CDN for providing services in Canada.
• US resident individuals or corporations whose total service contract duration is under 180 days in Canada.
Should you wish to apply for a Regulation 105 Waiver, we can provide you one. Filing instructions and filing requirements can be found in the Regulation 105 Guide which we will also provide.
Note: The Regulation 105 Waiver MUST be filled out and submitted to Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) prior to Grand Prix Toronto. The process for CRA to return your Regulation 105 Waiver can take several weeks. If you intend to file, please be aware to give yourself some lead time.
Standby
Standby judges are a special sponsorship class. Standby judges may not be used to judge at all at the event. If you are selected as a standby judge, you will be informed if you are needed to judge on Saturday and/or Sunday on Friday night. If you are requested to judge, you will receive the compensation package described above. If you are not selected to judge, you will be allowed to play in the Grand Prix free of charge (registration is a base event entry).
How to Apply
Simply click on the "Apply Now!" link toward the top of the page. Please answer all of the questions in the application form.
Note: If your judge level is currently incorrect on JudgeApps when you apply please mention this in your application.
Due to staff needs, judges may be accepted for one, two or three days. Please indicate your preference, and requirements to attend, in your application.
