Event Information

What is this?

The Training Grounds is a peer-driven study group focused on the ten Qualities of Regional Judges.  The goals of the Training Grounds are:

  1. to provide aspiring L3 judges with the knowledge and mentorship they need to advance to L3, and
  2. to produce training materials for future generations of L3 candidates.

The size of this group will be limited to about 15 L2s for the first block. This number will likely change as we go forward into other blocks of Qualities.

We are targeting candidates who are within about 6 months of requesting their PEI. Your application should consist of your Self-Review Draft, a short blurb on why you want to be a part of this group, and a short description of what you would like to get out of this group.

How will it work?

The Training Grounds will combine three methods of education for each Block. (You can see the Blocks, aka combinations of multiple Qualities in the chart a little farther down)

  1. Weekly discussions (“class”). The Training Grounds will be broken into five blocks, each focusing on one or two Qualities. Each session will feature one or two experienced judges as the instructors and subject matter experts. During the first week of each session, these instructors will post topics for all the students to discuss, via a private JudgeApps project forum.
  2. Small group discussion and mentorship (“recitation”). In addition, each L2 will be assigned to a small group of three to five candidates. These groups will be led by one or two L3 mentors, guiding discussion about the instructor’s lessons, as well as providing personal insights into the Quality being discussed. This discussion is meant to be more casual, and might ultimately be conducted via Facebook, email, Skype, etc., depending on the group. These groups will rotate with each new block.
  3. Content creation (“projects”). During the second week of each session, each small group will create some form of public content about the Quality being discussed. This content could take the form of articles, audio, or even video depending on the ideas/skills of the group members.

What are the logistics of participating?

This first Block will cover two Qualities: Self-Evaluation and Development of Other Judges.  This Block will run for 4 weeks (two weeks per Quality).  We plan to start on Monday, August 17, but this may be pushed back a week to allow more time for the selection process.

The Training Grounds itself will be active Monday - Thursday, allowing for event travel over the weekends. Discussions within groups will be via Facebook chat or equivalent. The main discussion about each Quality, presented to all the groups, will occur on a private forum within JudgeApps.  Each small group will post their summary/project to this group as well.

What about the other Qualities?

We will open up the applications for Block B approximately halfway through Block A.  The other blocks are as follows:

I'm interested in being a mentor or discussion leader.  How can I help?

Please email us (bluesaddict@gmail.com and pbaranay@gmail.com).  We are happy to invite experienced L2s to lead discussions.
