A local gaming store would like me to run a 15-proxy legacy tournament on weekly basis to help build the community, and bring people into the store. I would like to use Event Reporter to do pairings and standings as it is far easier than doing them by hand. However as far I know these would be unsanctionable events, and as such if I upload them the store and I can get in trouble and if I create events and don't upload them it raises a lot of questions. What is the best way to use WER without reporting, or am I missing something and can I report it as a casual event or something similar?

I have used it if I needed to run events off. My blackberry using paper to write down the parings.

It's been a while since I've done this, but I think it's possible to open casual unsanctioned events in WER all you want. You can even upload them, where they will be tracked but unsanctioned (players won't get PW points, I think, but last time I did this was before PWP existed - it's possible WER's functionality has changed since then. I'll take a look at it if I get a chance later today.)

And, of course, just running the event but not submitting the results is also an option…

You can also definitely run casual events or even unreported events in DCI Reporter (the instructions even suggest doing an unreported one as a test), if that helps. I've done both before.

Just checked it:

There is an option to run unsanctioned events. They even get one PWP(not seasonal, but Lifetime).
Just look under Schedule Events, and there is everything you need :)


If you run events but don't upload them, don't forget to cancel them later or your store gets delinquent events.

Be sure you don't actually report any of these events.
Even casual non-rated events fall under the MTR, and under the MTR players
have use real Magic cards.
This means that proxy events can't be sanctioned at all, even as casual
non-rated. Be very careful.

You really shouldn't report (or sanction, for that matter) any proxy-tournaments, for the reasons Charlotte stated. While using WER is possible, you might find using a non-WER program preferable (even if it's only to make sure noone accidentaly uploads the event). I have had very good experiences with http://tiebreaker.kraken.at/. It's using a script that doesn't require internet connection after initially loading the page, and so far I have not found problems with it.

The way I do it, is that I start WER, but don't log in. I then schedule a magic event, and get the warning “you are now creating an unsanctioned event, blah, blah”. This way the tournament is scheduled as unsanctioned, and when you're not logged in there's no possibility of the event being uploaded.

Towards the bottom, it discusses what “Casual Magic” is, and read to me as stating that the MTR doesn't apply to sanctioned casual Magic. Given that information, would tournaments that use proxies be reportable to WotC as Casual Magic events? All of the examples given in the article all use legal, official Magic cards, so it's not perfectly clear to me if the “doesn't use the MTR”-ness of a casual tournament is enough for proxies to be sanctioned. If it isn't, where is it stated that all sanctioned events must use official, legal Magic cards?

No, casual events are for players looking for direct social gaming. Online gaming doesn’t qualify, and like all WPN events, proxies are not allowed.
