WER offline mode not working

Originally posted by Steffen Baumgart:

Having a 150+ player PTQ coming up tomorrow, I tried the following:
- uninstall any currently installed WER software
- download and install the WER from here: http://webapp.wizards.com/DCIRUpdate/ReporterSetup.exe
- click “cancel” when prompted to update / login
- create a new fake event (offline) and use that to run the actual event
Downside: you can't look up any DCI numbers and you have to enter each player name and country manually

Edit: since the WotC servers seem to be offline at the moment, here's a mirror of the WER setup file: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/21791770/ReporterSetup.exe

Be very careful with that. A local store did that, WER seemed to be working in offline mode, then WER became unresponsive and froze mid-tournament.

I'd rather have a partially working WER that I have to restart every now and then than a pen&paper PTQ with 150 players. ;)

On a side note… WER is down since this afternoon, Event Locator is not working, Judge Center can't be accessed, and MTGO is offline.
Let me tell you this, I hope you had a good Friday 17th – because I'm sure somebody in WotC didn't.

EDIT – Judge Center can be accessed now, couldn't be accessed up to 30 minutes ago.

Here is a judge blog showing how to run an event in pen and paper, including how to work out breakers and top 8.

When I have had problems in the past, once WER gets going and doesn't have internet access, it shouldn't stop unless you give it access. Get the event started, then pull the plug on the internet for that computer, it should stay stable.

This is before the issues today, so YMMV.

I may be able to make a DCIR installer available if that's something people want as an alternative to pen and paper, but I'm not sure if that's something that WotC wants distributed.

Online currently with WER 4.1.14.439 (NOT the latest version). This is the
version before the changes to the create/edit event screen (the old single
window style as opposed to the current “wizard” style). I am able to lookup
DCI numbers without issue. I may have the installer for this version around
somewhere on a flash drive. If I find it, I will host it and edit this post
with the link.

EDIT: I cannot locate a more recent installer than the one already linked in this thread by Steffen Baumgart. This is version 4.1. I don't know if this is any better than the other versions mentioned here.

In a fairly recent post, Andy made it very clear that DCIR is not to be used.

I've removed the link to install that, since we can't use it.

confirm that without update, WER still can use in offline mode.

As Philip mentioned WER might unresponsive (which I can't test right now).
I suggest back up regularly every round before pairing will mitigate the
risk of WER data corrupt due to unresponsive.

moreover, if I am a scorekeeper, I will temporary turn off internet
connection during using WER (pairing, entering result). since we are using
offline mode anyway. Hope this help.

He guys, I use the WER for our weekly boosterdraft and of course I wasn’t able to be certified by WPN to use the WER in the online mode. After the shutdown of the servers at Monday I hoped that they will fix the problem with the offline mode. It still doesn’t work.

Does someone know an alternative I can use? The only programs I found were for tablets but I need something for laptop. Something for more than 8 players.

Did you try what Steffen suggested?

- uninstall any currently installed WER software (make sure to backup local player database and any events you want to keep first!)
- download and install the WER from here: http://webapp.wizards.com/DCIRUpdate/ReporterSetup.exe
- click “cancel” when prompted to update / login
- create a new fake event (offline) and use that to run the actual event

To someone who may concern;

I did a fresh install and update WER today, still have freeze problem in offline mode.

If anyone want to use offline mode, do not update the WER.

I've been told that if you remove your computer from the Internet (unplug it, or turn off your network adapter), offline mode works. I don't know how true this is.
