Event Information
MidMichigan Area Conference: 2018 August 25
As our community continues to grow, with more judges brought into the fold, we must ensure that everyone builds from a foundation of current best practices. Judge conferences are an occasion to meet new people and see old friends, to learn and teach, to share your perspective and spread knowledge. They are one of the best opportunities to cultivate good practice and share what works for you.
The MidMichigan Area Conference seeks to provide judges firsthand experience with situations that might arise at events by simulating a real tournament environment. The goal of the mock tournament is to provide a competitive training opportunity to as many judges as possible within in an environment where they can receive vital feedback and mentorship from other judges.
WHAT IS A MOCK TOURNAMENT?
This conference will be run as a medium-sized tournament. The format of the tournament will be 4 pack sealed and will run for 4 rounds. There will be different teams of judges (deck checks, logistics, paper, end of round) with team leads and a head judge. Between each round will be a debriefing where "lessons learned" during the round will be shared and we can discuss best practices for situations that occur.
All certified judges are encouraged to attend and participate. This application is for those who would like to apply as a player (attendee) or as a presenter. Those who wish to participate as a Floor or Head Judge should apply for the corresponding sponsorship on their application. Please feel free to apply for both roles. If you have a preference for teams, please note it in your cover letter.
Players (attendees) will participate in the tournament. They will also participate in the team debriefs that will happen at the end of each round. If you apply as a player you will not be participating as a judge.
Presenters will also be players in the tournament but will have a unique role during the tournament. Presenters will have specific scenarios that they will run during the tournament. Scenarios will include rules questions, policy scenarios, and investigations. We are looking for people who are experienced at running/judging competitive level events. Presenters will have pre-conference work and preparation assigned and will be working closely with the conference organizers and other presenters to make sure we have a large pool of scenarios to run.
This conference will count as a Judge Tournament Qualifier (JTQ), and therefore will be considered as a Competitive REL event for L1s seeking advancement. Judges seeking a Recommendation Review should contact Conference Organizers two week prior to the event to make arrangements for observation.
HOW TO APPLY
Please use this opportunity to receive feedback on your cover letter. Apply to this event as if you are applying to work a public event. Please include your goals, experience, and other skills that would encourage a Tournament Organizer to staff you.
If you would like to play in the event only and neither judge nor present select STANDBY sponsorship on your application. Standby staffing will be given scenarios, but will not participate in the creation of them. You will also participate in between rounds debriefing.
If you wish to be a judge at this event select BASIC sponsorship on your application. L1's and newer L2's are encouraged to choose this option. Head Judges and Team Leads will be selected from this pool of applicants. If you’d like to serve in either of those roles, note so in your application.
If you wish to be a Presenter for this Conference select FULL SPONSORSHIP, you will be expected to work with organizers and other presenters before the conference to develop and implement scenarios.
Finally, Testing will be available for those L1s who have completed their requirements and would like to test. Please include that information in your application cover letter.
IS THIS FOIL SUPPORTED?
Yes. As an area conference Wizards of the Coast and the Judge Program will be providing Judge Foils to certified judges at this conference. Only applicants who are certified judges at the close of applications will receive foils. Attendees will receive one packet of 4 judge foils, presenters will receive two packets. The foil allotment for this conference supports 30 participants.
