Event Information

Welcome to the application for another Central Region mini-conference!  This conference will be hosted by Pastimes, and will be foil supported.

This conference will be a mock tournament.  More experienced judges will act as players while less experienced judges act as floor judges and even head judge.  This will give less experienced judges the opportunity to practice their Comp REL skills in a fun environment where they can be shadowed and gain helpful feedback.

In addition, there will be some traditional conference presentations focused on Comp REL skills.

Roles Needed:

Presenters - We need experienced L2s to present on Comp REL relevent topics.

Deck Check Workshop Lead - Lead will be responsible for providing 3-4 pairs of decks and decklists that judges can practice deck checking with.  The materials should contain both error and error-free decklists, as well as some post-board decks.

Investigations Workshop Lead - Lead will be responsible for developing and setting up 4 detailed scenarios that will test a judge's ability to investigate a situation fully.  Judges should be expected to investigate situations involving such skills as card counting, resolving life total discrepancies, and determining cheating.

Head Judge - Head Judge(s) is responsible for working with conference staff to pick Team Leads and other pre-tournament prep-work.  On the day of the event, Head Judge will run the tournament portion of the mock tournament.

Team Lead - Team Leads are responsible for communicating with both their assigned teams and the Head Judge, to help keep the tournament running smoothly, as wll as taking judge calls on the floor.

Floor Judge - Floor Judges are responsible for taking judge calls on the event floor and any other tasks assigned to them by their Team Lead or the Head Judge.

Player - Players are responsible for playing Magic, while also fulfilling any specific requests given to them by the conference staff to improve learning opportunities for the event judges, such as "In this match, I want you to cheat," or "I want you to be very beligerant during this match."

For those of you who haven't heard about the way Central Region conferences will be working this year, let me fill you in.  Instead of running a few large conferences for our region, we will be running a lot of little conferences, all with foil support.  Since the smaller conference model allows cities without a ton of judges to still have a local conference, we're hoping that more judges will be able to come out and learn with us.  Because our aim is to allow the most number of unique judges possible to attend a conference in 2018, we will be giving priority to judges who have not yet been accepted to a 2018 conference.  Keep in mind, should you be planning to attend a conference closer to your city at a later date, by getting foils at this conference, you will be less likely to get them at that closer conference later.  But, if you just want to come to a bunch of conferences to hang out with great judges and learn from interesting and informative presentations, and you couldn't care less about the foil support, feel free to come to as many as you'd like.

Schedule:
Mock Tournaments go long.  To accomodate a number of rounds of tournament play in addition to traditional presentation, expect to start early and end late.  The St. Louis Mock Tournament held earlier this year started at 9am and ended close to 7pm, to give you an idea.  Exact schedule is TBA.

This conference can accept 35 judges.

To be accepted, please write a cover letter.  Applications with no cover letter will be accepted at a lower priority.

Everyone who applies to the conference will be put as either "attendee" or "standby".  "Standby" means that, for one reason or another, you are not eligible for foils.  I am not actually declining anyone so that those who are not eligible for foils can still read the forum posts and get important conference information.

Testing for L1 and L2 will likely be available.  If you would like to test, make sure to mention it in your application, and be prepared to show us proof of your readiness when we follow up.  If you do not inform us beforehand, we are unlikely to test you at the conference.
