Gen Con 2019 Presented by Pastimes

Pastimes is excited to have you join us in making this one of the best events of the year creating amazing Magic: the Gathering experiences for attendees of Gen Con on August 1st - 4th, 2019. This application will allow you to apply to be a Judge, Lead, Admin, Retail, or Scorekeeper for this event.

Please read the entire application before applying. Applications for this event will close on Friday, July 5th, 2019.

To allow for a more flexible schedule we are offering positions from one day up to four days. Please only select days on which you will be able to work.

Most Lead, Admin, and Scorekeeping positions are four day commitments which require a long availability. Please only select days on which you will be able to work and remember that Gen Con is a 24 hour show!

You can apply for as many roles as you like, and you might have more than one role over the course of the event. If selected as a judge, you may be asked to assist in admin tasks.

JUDGES

If selected for a judging role, you may be asked to do any of the following:

-Judge Scheduled Events
-Judges On Demand Events

LEARN TO PLAY

If selected for Learn to Play, you may be asked to do any of the following:

-Invite attendees to learn how to play through a short explanation
-Teach new and returning groups of up to 4 attendees in 15-20 minute sessions

Everyone in Learn to Play will be provided with a primer explaining the Learn To Play process.

ADMIN

If selected for an admin role, you may be asked to work in one or more of the following areas:
-Information Desk

-Registration

-Prize Wall

-Other Event Admin Duties

Everyone in admin roles will be provided with a primer explaining Pastimes Admin Policies.

Many people in admin roles will be expected to work all four days, although a few may be scheduled for less than four days.

SCOREKEEPERS

Scorekeepers will work with registration to enroll players in both scheduled and on demand events along with performing results entry. All scorekeepers will be provided with a primer explaining Pastimes Scorekeeping Policies.

RETAIL

Retail members will work with Pastimes/Gamermats staff in our retail areas assisting customers with their questions and purchases.

ALL STAFF

Shifts are typically 12 hours with at least one hour long lunch/dinner break and at least two fifteen minute breaks. Lead shifts are typically between 10-14 hours with at least one hour long lunch/dinner break and at least two fifteen minute breaks. Do not forget that Gen Con is a 24 hour show!

If selected for this event, you are responsible for monitoring the event forum for important news prior to and during the event!

We will need help on Wednesday preparing our area to receive Gen Con Attendees. Anyone selected for Wednesday Setup will receive $200 for the day. Lunch will be provided.

The shift starts at 10:00 AM and will continue until the area is fully setup. This typically takes between ten to twelve hours. Our goal is to be completed by 8:00 PM however, this shift can take longer if tasks are not complete. Please be prepared for physical tasks if you select this option.

Due to the short event day on Sunday, all staff members will be assisting with teardown. Please be prepared for the physical work if you plan to apply for this day. Due to lifting and loading, staff members will be given time to change from their judge or staff uniform to something more comfortable once attendees have left. We keep in mind the time any staff member came in and release them as necessary.

Hotel is available for staff members selected for three or more days at a maximum of three staff members to a room (2 beds and a pullout/sofa). If you elect to use our hotel option, $75 will be deducted from your compensation for each night of hotel used.

Check-in for hotels will be the day before your first shift and Check-out will be the day of you final shift. Judges on overnight shifts will Check-in the day of their first shift and Check-out the day after. THERE ARE NO SUNDAY NIGHT HOTEL ROOMS PROVIDED BY PASTIMES.

If you are selected for standby you are not confirmed to work any day, but agree to be available as necessary. Standby staff will be added to the event and forum communications. We may add standbys to staff before the event begins or even on site. If you are not activated, we encourage you to come out and enjoy the convention. Staff selected for standby will receive a four day Gen Con badge.

Please apply only for status types you will accept. If you only select Basic, we will not consider you for standby.

All staff for this event are independent contractors and will be required to a W9 or W8BEN. This paperwork will sent to you and needs to be completed through PDFiller by Wednesday, July 24th. If this is not completed a check will be mailed to you by Friday, August 9th.

Every year prior to the start of Gen Con we host a full staff meeting to discuss the event and introduce the leads for the show. This is a great time to network and meet other judges as well as organize up some awesome games of Magic. We hope that everyone on staff will be able to meet up, learn about Magic at Gen Con, and have a great time!
