Event Information
Dark Sphere is inviting judges for its first Mythic Championship Qualifier for Richmond.
The head judge of this event will be Thomas Ralph (L3, London) and the Rules Enforcement Level (REL) will be Competitive.
We would like to invite judges of level 1 or higher to apply. It may be possible to conduct judge exams at the event. Please contact Thomas Ralph for details.
As the size of Mythic Championships Qualifiers has tended to be highly variable, we are inviting judges on both a confirmed (identified as “basic” in the application) or standby basis. Standby judges are asked to attend as normal and if player numbers indicate they will be required, they may be activated at the same compensation as floor judges. Should they not be activated they will receive a complimentary entry to the MCQ.
Expected hours
Floor and standby judges will need to be present for a judge meeting at 8:15am. A player meeting will commence at 8:45 for a 9:00 start of round 1. Floor judges will be required until the end of the Swiss rounds. We expect this will be no later than 6:00pm.
A lunch break of no less than 45 minutes will be provided.
Expected standards
Judges should have a level of familiarity with the Comprehensive Rules, Magic Tournament Rules, and Infraction and Procedure Guide. Previous experience at Competitive level events is not mandatory, but will increase the chance of your application being successful.
High standards of customer service, professionalism, timekeeping, and efficiency are all expected. Dark Sphere and its customers value an efficiently run tournament that keeps to time.
You only get one chance to make a first impression, and therefore:
- Judges at this event should wear a black Magic Judge shirt. Those who do not possess one or wish to wear it may wear any predominantly black collared shirt, which may be long- or short-sleeved. Where applicable, shirt sleeves may be rolled up or buttoned as desired.
- Where possible, Judges should change or cover judge shirts whilst on break or otherwise off duty.
- Judges on staff wear black or dark grey trousers (such as slacks, chinos, or cargo trousers) with socks, or a black or dark grey skirt with black opaque tights.
- As an alternative to the above, Judges on staff may wear a predominantly black dress which should cover the shoulders.
- A belt is to be worn with trousers that have belt loops. Shirts of a style typically worn tucked into trousers should be worn as such.
- Judges on staff wear predominantly black shoes. Recognising that you will be on your feet for much of the day, trainers are acceptable footwear.
- T-shirts, tracksuit tops/bottoms, hoodies, shorts, miniskirts/dresses, white shoes, clothing with inappropriate slogans, or clothing bearing brands of direct competitors of Magic: The Gathering or Dark Sphere are examples of inappropriate items of clothing whilst on duty.
Customary standards of personal hygiene and grooming should be observed.
Compensation
Floor judges will each receive one and a half boxes of Core 2020 boosters as an appreciation of their time and effort. They may elect instead to receive any other in-stock items of a similar value as agreed with the TO, or £85 which will be paid by PayPal or similar.
If you are interested in this event but the level of compensation makes it difficult for you to attend, please indicate in your cover letter what would be required to make the event feasible for you.
Accommodation
Select the “Room Sponsorship” option in your application if you wish to stay over at the head judge’s house on Friday night. There is no charge for this. Any other accommodation and all travel costs are at judges' own expense.
