Event Information
Yay, Judge Apps is back! I'm very happy we can use our old trusted website again, and I'm glad we can post our events here. Just to be sure: the actual applications go via a Google Form, not via Apps (yet). Please apply at https://forms.gle/ni1RRq7AGqzWKHgZ8
After a very successful first year, we’re proud and happy to announce that the Dutch Open Series will continue in the weekend of January 13 and 14! Our Tournament Organisers are still Rob de Haan and Sebastiaan Tuinstra and your Judge Manager is Dustin de Leeuw. We still play at the Fletcher Hotel in Nieuwegein, and the DOS is still an amazing opportunity to judge one of the largest events in the Netherlands, encounter interesting situations, and to learn, teach and share experiences like at no other event!
We are welcoming both seasoned judges and newer judges who want to hone their skills, but we do expect applicants to have some prior experience at Competitive Rules Enforcement Level. Being a member of Judge Academy is not a prerequisite for being accepted to judge the DOS; your current judge level does not affect your chances of being accepted.
In addition, we now also offer one training slot per day for people who are interested in becoming a DOS judge. No prior experience is required, just some curiosity and willingness to invest time and effort in preparing, learning and reflecting on how this event went for you. We recognise the importance of fostering a future generation of Dutch judges with Competitive experience and want to contribute by offering hands-on training during DOS events.
We are accepting judges for Saturday, Sunday or both days, and we strive for a good mix of judges of various backgrounds. We are looking for a total of approximately 9-10 judges for each day. In order to offer more judges an opportunity to judge, we also accept 1 or 2 judges as a standby per day; if activated, you receive full compensation, and if not activated, you receive a travel stipend and can play any event of your choice for free. Saturday the formats are Modern and Sealed, Sunday there are Legacy and Pioneer.
Judge shifts start Saturday at 9.00 AM and Sunday at 9.15 AM; shifts end when both events have started their Top 8. Head Judge shifts end when there are fewer than 12 players left in total. Each day, one judge has a Late Shift which starts at 11.00 AM and ends when all events have finished. Head Judge and Late Shift roles are exclusively for very experienced judges. Each day we also need a Deck Check Lead and a Paper Lead; these positions are available to intermediate and very experienced judges.
Application deadline is Sunday December 10 at midnight, selection will be announced one week later.
The compensation per day is:
€75,00 for Floor Judges and Intermediate roles. Head Judges and Late Shift Judges receive an additional compensation of €25. Trainees receive €50. All compensations are paid after the event via bank transfer; if this does not work for you, please let us know (the penultimate question in this form would be a great place to do so).
Lunch (2 sandwiches), water / soft drinks / coffee / tea / snacks throughout the day and dinner.
Travel Compensation (maximum of € 35,00 per day, based on Public Transport expenses). If you're selected for 2 days, you may either receive Travel Compensation twice or receive Travel Compensation once and get a hotel room in the Fletcher Hotel for Saturday night, to be shared with an other staff member.
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at dustindeleeuw@hotmail.com
Looking forward to seeing you soon again!
Greetz, Dustin.
