My name is Travis Lauro, and on behalf of the Hunter Burton Memorial team, I’m excited to share with you the details for the 2025 Hunter Burton Memorial Open. For the past several years, this event has been a mainstay in the North Texas area and continues to support Suicide Awareness and Prevention.
As in past years, we anticipate receiving more applicants than we have space for, so please fill out the application to the best of your ability. Some event details have changed for 2025; please find below all the information regarding volunteering as a judge or operations staff for the 2025 event.

Event Information

2025 HBMO Head Judge – Amanda Coots

Ian Jasheway Memorial Sealed RCQ Head Judge – TBD

Sunday Standard 5k Head Judge – TBD

The 2025 tournament will feature the Modern main event, as well as a few other competitive events on each day. The main event will be played with Swiss rounds on both Saturday and Sunday.

The HBMO and events listed above event will be run at competitive REL.

We will also be hosting the Jeff Zandi Chaos Sealed event on Sunday afternoon.

We’re seeking judges for Saturday and Sunday. Additionally, a small number of judges will be staffed for Friday.

Applications close on January 13, 2025, and the initial wave of staffing offers will be sent at least 8 weeks prior to the event, by January 17, 2025. Additional offers will be sent the following week as necessary.

Lodging and Travel

To make your weekend easier, we would like to provide lodging at the hotel attached to the venue if needed. After staff is finalized, we will determine what everyone needs and get it booked for you. Expectation should be two judges to a room, and we’ll try to honor whatever requests you have.

Additionally, to facilitate travel for staff traveling great distances, travel sponsorship will be offered to the accepted staff, which can be used to reimburse your travel costs; the exact amount will depend on need. Receipts for travel expenses, such as flight, gas, tolls, or meals, will be required to receive your travel sponsorship reimbursement. Travel sponsorship recipients will be notified of their award at the time of staff selection.

Perks and Swag

All volunteers for the 2025 Hunter Burton Memorial Open will receive a swag bag with some goodies. We have a catered lunch scheduled for each day. Additionally, this year, volunteers will receive a staff shirt for use at this event and other events. Your swag bag will include:

Staff Party

As a thank you for all the hard work done by our volunteer staff all weekend, we will be hosting a staff party at Bronco’s Sports Bar & Grill near the event venue on Sunday night. Food will be provided, and drinks will be available for purchase.

Standby

A small number of judges will be accepted as standby and will receive free entry to the main event or two other events of their choice if not activated.

Setup & Other Volunteering

The HBMO also needs additional volunteers to help with some of our preparation including collating swag bags, and event setup on Thursday and Friday. We have a small team of volunteers already, but if you’re willing to help out please let us know.
