Event Information
Greetings!
This is your chance to apply to judge Shoebox, a multi-format convention-style event showcasing creative expression, social play, and friendly competition.
This application covers both lead and non-lead roles, with different end dates for each type of application. Please read this application carefully.
Application End Dates and Selection Announcement Dates
Lead role applications close September 29th (immediately after MagicCon Atlanta).
Non-lead role applications close October 20th (immediately after CubeCon).
Lead selections will be announced on October 13th.
Non-lead selections will be announced on October 27th.
So what is this event all about?
Shoebox is designed as an event to feature fun, creative, and nontraditional ways to play Magic. The headlining events (there will be more detail on these below) are a major Cube event, a TEDH/CEDH event, a Team Sealed, and a Pauper event. These are the big headlining events, but there are going to be a wide variety of ways to play.
Are you passionate about some unusual format like Judge’s Tower, Dandan, Pre-Modern, or 2HG? This is the event for you. There is a dedicated Carnival area that is designed to showcase some of these less-played formats in a social space where people can try them out and find new flavors of Magic and the Magic community that they like.
Are you passionate about helping players find new and exciting ways to have fun, and enable the gathering and community aspects of gameplay? This is the event for you. We want staff that wants to maximize the social and interactive aspect of the game. Competition is important (we are playing a game, and people want to win), but we have the goal of growing communities and making fair and social play happen.
What are the headlining events, and what kind of events could I end up working?
You can see full details at https://shoebox.gg/events

Open Play
So Which of These Will I Work?
The application has ranking for each of these areas, and you may end up in any or all of them. If you really really want to work in a particular area, please mention it in your cover letter. You can also mention areas you want to never work, but this is a more difficult thing to make happen. We will do our best to not fully assign you to some area you said you never want to work, but due to the nature of convention play you may temporarily be assigned to these spaces for break coverage or be adjacent to them and have to assist them with calls or other operational needs.
What roles are being hired?
General information for all roles
All roles regardless of number of days hired will receive a 3-day badge to Shoebox, and we strongly encourage you to make use of this badge. We aim to have judges have fun playing Magic and being part of the community.
All staff are by default expected to help with some amount of physical duties, including product or cube distribution and teardown. Staff may have to stand, bend, squat, and lift at least 10lbs. (Exceptions can and will be made for this - if you cannot fulfill these expectations, please let us know in the application or during event communications and we will work to make whatever role you are in possible for you to do.)
Shifts will be either full or partial for all non-lead roles.
Full shifts will be approximately nine hours with at least one hour of breaks.
Partial shifts will be approximately five hours with at least 30 minutes of breaks.
Lead positions are only available for full shifts. Lead shifts will be approximately 11 hours with 90 minutes of breaks.
All judges will be provided with a shirt for each of Friday, Saturday, and Sunday they work. The other uniform expectations are bottoms that are clean and in good repair and comfortable shoes.
Floor Judge
Full Shift - $250 per shift
Partial Shift - $150 per shift
Floor judges are the backbone staff that make up the event, and may be assigned to any of many roles and areas. There are questions about what areas you want or do not want to work. Please answer these. If you have a high level of event expertise in an unusual format, we would love to hear about it so we can get you into that area.
Judge Team Lead
Full Shift - $325 per shift
Judge Team Leads are responsible for managing groups of judges in addition to their floor judge roles.
This role may also include managing event starts for scheduled sides and on-demands events.
This role also may include providing breaks to judges in key roles.
Large Event Head Judge/Support Judge
Overall Weekend Offer - $ 1,000 plus hotel from Thursday to Monday
This offer is for the Trios Limited Head Judge and the Pauper Head Judge and one Support Judge who will be expected to take appeals on both of these events.
These judges are expected to act as dedicated stewards of their assigned event, and on days they are not head judging those events may act as Team Leads or in other leadership positions. Their shifts are tied to their event lengths.
The Support Judge position is a dedicated second appeals person and breaks person for both of these events - they are not expected to be with the event from beginning to end through all of both Swiss and elimination rounds and may end up with other duties during elimination rounds for the events.
Back of House/Operations
Full Shift - $275 per shift
Partial Shift - $150 per shift
Back of house positions will be slightly unusual this show compared to other events. We have both normal limited events and cube events.
The general expectations for back of house are to prepare product for all events - this will include cube management for on-demand cubes and the main cube event.
Back of house members are required to be able to lift 40lbs and sit and stand and walk actively to bring product to different places that need it.
Back of House Team Lead
Overall Weekend Offer - $1,350 plus hotel from Wednesday to Monday
This offer is for the person who will be managing the back of house team. They are expected to be on site Thursday to do product preparation and other setup duties.
They also have the expectation of tracking all product usage for the weekend, including cubes.
Scorekeeping
Full Shift - $325 per shift
Scorekeepers are expected to setup and mange the events within their space and ensure accurate reporting and turnaround for event rounds. The scorekeeping software may be unusual due to the unusual nature of the event - expertise in a particular software is not required, but a general knowledge of multiple scorekeeping softwares will be helpful.
Scorekeepers for this event may end up managing cube drafts, managing placing on-demand events, managing multiplayer tournaments, managing team events, or doing other unusual things. Flexibility and a desire to learn as you go and try things out is appreciated.
Scorekeeping Team Lead
Overall Weekend Offer - $1,100 plus hotel from Thursday to Monday
This offer is for the person who will be managing the multiple scorekeepers in different positions. This person will be expected to provide breaks for these scorekeepers, troubleshoot issues, and provide support for them across the different scorekeeping roles.
Coverage Judge
Overall Weekend Offer - $ 1,000 plus hotel from Thursday to Monday
This offer is to manage the coverage area for all three days. We will be doing coverage of all the major events, and judges in this position will be in the coverage area regardless of the format. They will handle calls, assist the coverage team, and maintain the space. There may be cube drafts, Commander matches, Limited Trios gameplay and drafting, and Pauper gameplay within the area.
Setup and Teardown
Setup Shift - $325 per shift
Teardown Shift - $325 per shift
There are a limited number of setup and teardown roles available.
Setup will be on Thursday, and Teardown on Sunday.
These roles are very physical - you are expected to be able to setup and teardown tables, chairs, stage equipment, graphics, and other things, and unload and load them.
Setup shift will be approximately normal shift length on Thursday.
Teardown shift will start later on Sunday and will go until we are fully torn down.
The exact hours for each are not set yet, they will be posted with the staff schedule.
Standby
We are offering a “Standby” role. This role receives a 3-day badge to the event, on the expectation they will be available to be activated to judge the event. They will also get whatever judge gifts are provided to staff.
