Judge Compensation
Our offer for GP Milan
As you're likely already aware, Wizards of the Coast no longer provides judge foils to support judges at Grand Prix events. This means we've had to take a close look at ways to make judging these events viable for you. This was a hard exercise, but we feel we've come up with a way to make attending GP Milan as a judge as attractive as possible. We'd love hearing back from you on this, so don't hesitate to contact us with questions and feedback. We will most definitely be taking your input into account for our upcoming Grand Prix events.
Here is what we will offer for Grand Prix Milan:
- L2 judges will receive 3 displays per day worked. L3, L4 and L5 judges will receive 4 displays per day worked. We'll ship any amount of them to an address of your choice in Europe.
- For L3 judges, there is an option to receive up to two boxes of their allotment in Russian. For L4 and L5 judges, that's up to 4 boxes.
- All judges will receive a Tournament Center goodie bag containing, among other items, the GP playmat as well as a second, limited-edition playmat with different, exclusive artwork.
- All judges will be able to make free use of the shuttle service.
- All judges will receive 15€ per day worked as a food stipend. Additionally, coffee, water and soup will be available in the judge room.
- We will arrange a room block in the staff hotel where judges will be able to reserve their rooms at the reduced rate of 25€ per night per judge in a twin room. We hope that this effort will help judges find affordable accomodations. Note that these rooms are exclusively meant for judges and will come at a significantly reduced rate.
- You may apply for additional sponsorship. In this case, if you are selected, we will send you an offer (in Euro) based on your level and experience, your expected travel expenses and the room rate, as well as our previous interactions with you at Tournament Center events. Details on this are below.
We hope that judges living relatively close to the Grand Prix will agree that this offer is indeed very attractive. For those experienced judges living a bit further away, we are confident that the additional sponsorship is going to help them attend the Grand Prix.
Additional sponsorship
Some judges will receive an additional sponsorship, which everybody may apply for (select the "Full Sponsorship" or "Room Sponsorship" option when applying). A number of factors will determine whether you are eligible for this, and a number of factors will determine the offer you receive. We will try to be as transparant as possible here. Some guiding principles in the selection process:
- What level are you? As L3+, you're much more likely to receive additional sponsorship than as L2 (so level up, guys!). As L4, you're likely going to receive a higher offer than as L3. Is this set in stone? No. We value judges of all levels and will be making numerous exceptions.
- How much GP experience do you have, what value do you bring to the event, what are our previous experiences with you? This doesn't mean newer judges will never be accepted for additional sponsorship; it just means that we are likely to give people with relevant experience a better offer. It also means that if you helped us out at events in the past where finding judges was hard, we'll not have forgotten your efforts.
- How close do you live to the GP? We want to make GP judging viable for as many judges as possible but the reality is that not everyone lives in Milan and some need to travel quite some distance to get there. If you live further away, your chances of being accepted for additional sponsorship will be slightly smaller, but the offer you receive will be higher, to make it easier for you to actually attend the GP.
Standby judges
As a standby judge, you'll only be asked to judge if we exceed the expected turnout. In that case, you'll be offered the same package as a volunteer. Otherwise, you may participate for free in the event.
Technicalities -- please read before applying!
There are four types of sponsorship you can apply for: volunteer (and standby), room sponsorship and full sponsorship.

Technicalities -- please read before applying!
There are four types of sponsorship you can apply for: volunteer (and standby), room sponsorship and full sponsorship.
- If selected as a volunteer/standby judge, you'll not be offered any additional sponsorship
- If you're accepted with room sponsorship, your offer will be based on the price of the room (which we will book for you, but not pay, your offer should cover most or all of that cost, though). All judges may make use of the room deal, but you're not required to do so, even if you have room sponsorship.
- If you're accepted for full sponsorship, we'll go some of the distance in covering your travel expenses as well as the hotel.
In BOTH of the latter cases, the offer will be adjusted based on the other factors we talked about above, including your level and experience.
Please answer all of the questions in the application form as they're important. If you're applying for full sponsorship, please do not forget your estimated travel costs.
If you're selected, we will either inform you you've been selected as a volunteer, or contact you with an offer. In the latter case, we'll need a reply from you within 7 days confirming whether or not you'll accept the offer. If some people turn down the offer or do not reply, other judges may be offered their slot.

All judges will be expected to sign a contract. You'll be able to download this soon; more information is coming as we're finalizing details.
Judges (including standby judges) wishing to book the hotel room at a reduced rate will be asked to contact us soon after the selection process. We will take care of booking the rooms for you and we'll pay part of the room rate directly to the hotel. You'll be asked to pay the rest of the reduced rate directly to the hotel.
If you have a good reason to get a different offer or you want some flexibility here or there, please ask us. We're happy to personalize our offer for you!
This process is new for us as much as it is for you. We've spent a lot of time brainstorming and we're proud of what we're able to offer you. However, as it's the first time, we have no doubt some things might not turn out as well as expected, just like we hope some others will turn out better (we're really looking forward to the exclusive playmat!). Either way, we'd love to hear your feedback, both now and after the event, so that we can improve for next time. Think of it as if you're writing a review! Be honest, be constructive; it's the best way to help us ... and yourself ;-)
