Grand Prix Los Angeles 2016 (Judge)

On behalf of ChannelFireball, I want to thank you for your interest in working at Grand Prix: Los Angeles 2016! The dates for this event are May 20th, 2016 through May 22nd 2016. Please be sure to read the entire application carefully before applying. The application window will close on Monday, March 21st, 2016.

Expectations:
This application covers judging roles, including the Main Event, Scheduled Side Events, and On Demand Events. If you are only interested in ADMINISTRATIVE roles such as Registration, Customer Service, Prize Wall, V.I.P., or Artist Alley, please apply to the Admin Application posted concurrently with this event.  You can find that event here: http://apps.magicjudges.org/events/5075/

Please note that you may apply to both applications, though you will only be selected through one.  If you are selected for judge staff, you may still be asked to do take on administrative roles if needed.  If selected for a judging role, you may be asked to do any of the following:

•Work on one of the Main Event Teams (paper, floor, deck check, logistics, etc.)

•Judge Scheduled Side Events

•Judge On Demand Events

Everyone selected for judge staff would be expected to work the Saturday and Sunday.  Some on staff will be selected for Thursday set-up and Friday on events.

Compensation:
All staff members will receive a Grand Prix: Los Angeles JUDGE playmat in addition to the following: 

•L1: $100 + 1 box per day

•L2: $200 + 1 box per day

•L3: $300 + 1 box per day

The per day compensation rate covers Friday, Saturday and Sunday.  All judges are expected to work Saturday and Sunday (with some exceptions).  Some judges will work Friday.

You an opt to receive all or a portion of this compenstion in Channel Fireball Store credit rate of 130%.  For example, instead of receiving $100 cash, you can receive $130 in store credit.

Thursday Set Up:

We will need some judge staff on Thursday to assist with product preparation for the main event, set up of some banners and graphics and other miscellaneous set up. 

Compensation for Thursday is not based on certification level.  Anyone selected to help out on Thursday will receive $100 and 2 additional boxes of product.

This shift would start at 10 AM on Thursday and will go until 8 PM or later.

Saturday Extended Shift:

We are offering an extended shift for judges who would like to volunteer to work a longer shift on Saturday that will last as long as the full nine rounds of the Main Event.  This will allow us to have more stability for the judge staff.  If you are interested in volunteering for this, please indicate so on your application. The additional compensation for the extended Saturday shift is:

•L1: Not eligible for extended shifts.

•L2: +$100

•L3: +$200

We expect that approximately 40% of judges that apply for extended shifts will be granted.  All L3s that apply for the extended shift will receive it.

Selection for extended shifts may not be decided when the staff is initially chosen.  We will get the extended shift information out to staff as soon as it becomes available.

Sunday Strike:

Just as we need some help with set up on Thursday, we need a small crew to assist on Sunday night with striking some equipment.  This shift would start at 3 PM on Sunday and could go until Midnight or later.  If you are selected for this, you would not be on judge staff on Sunday.  If selected for this, you would receive an box of product in addition to your normal rate of compensation for your certification level. This work is physical in nature and you would need to be able to lift and move large and heavy items for much of the time on this shift.

Status types:
You may apply for one or both statuses: Confirmed or Standby.

•Confirmed means that you are confirmed to work the event. Staffing needs vary day-by-day, but Friday staffing will be posted shortly after final selections are made. To apply for Confirmed status, please select "Full Sponsorship.”

•Standby means that you are not confirmed to work on any day, but that you agree to show up and be "activated" as necessary. You will be included in forum communications, and we may activate you before the event begins, or even on site. If you are not activated in advance, we encourage you to show up and play. Judges selected for standby will receive free VIP entry into the event and vouchers worth three side event drafts.

Please apply for all status types you will accept. If you select Standby and Confirmed, we will consider you for Confirmed staff first. If you select Confirmed, but do not select Standby, we will not consider you for Standby.

Paperwork:

Please note that all staff members are independent contractors and will be required to complete US tax paperwork prior to beginning their shift. 

• Some Staff will be required to fill out an I-9 form and be able to present the appropriate documentation in person before they begin working.  You can find the form and the list of documents here.

•US citizens and US residents must complete a W-9. 

•Non-US citizen international residents that are eligible to work in the US must complete a W-8BEN.

The I-9 form is only required once; however the remaining paperwork is required for each ChannelFireball Grand Prix, even if you have previously completed these forms for ChannelFireball.

Channel Fireball uses a third party Human Resources service called Zenefits.  Once you are selected for the Grand Prix, you will receive an email from Zenefits saying that "Superstars of Sports, Inc" (CFB's parent company) would like your information.  You only need to fill out your SSN and mailing address.  Zenefits may request your bank account information, but that is not required for this process.  

Hotel:

We have arranged for discounted hotel rooms at the Sheraton Los Angeles Downtown Hotel.  The hotel is about a 15 minute walk to the venue.  See below for hotel location and a booking link.  Rates start at $179/night.
