Event Information

Judge Conferences are the occasion to meet new people and see old friends from all around the world, to learn and teach, to share your tips and spread knowledge. They are one of the best opportunities to get good practices and updated information passed amongst the judge community. During this conference, shorts seminars or workshops focused on different aspects of the judge program will be presented by volunteers.

The Judge Conference is open to everyone, regardless of Judge Level (Non-Certified Judges are welcome as well!), or whether you are judging at your store or internationally. If you are interested in attending, please apply so we will have an accurate headcount.

TIME

The Swiss Judge Conference 2016 will be held from 10:00 am until about 5:00 pm on Sunday, June 5th.

Current Schedule (needs to be confirmed):

From DEC to current HCE
A year ago, Hidden Card Error replaced Drawing Extra Cards, and the subsequent Game Loss became a Warning.
A year later, after several changes, Hidden Card Error has stabilized.
Why did it change? How did it become the thing it now is?

Here's the story of the most radical change since Missed Trigger!

Investigation (Basic)

I know very well that something is rotten in this judge call I just got, but how can I get some elements out of it? How can I decide? You'll have to follow a simple guide on investigation techniques and you'll be able to bring it immediately live to find out who is cheating right in front of you!

Goal: 30 minutes presentation + 40 minutes workshop

Building the community

With this seminar, I will try to explain what we have been able to do in the Paris area to create a huge judges community, and more importantly what we have learned that you can apply to your own area, no matter its size. After this seminar, I really hope you will realise that everything is possible, and only one or two motivated judges are needed to create a great community.

Judging at Regular

Recap the philosophy of regular REL and three types of problems in the JAR. Discuss a few (non-black-and-white) examples.

Regular and competitive REL are philosophically distinct (as opposed to IPG > JAR)

Call Simulation

This seminar is to provide practical experience to Judges. I love conferences and attended a lot of them. I realized that our seminars were very very theoritical and there was a demand of practical experience ("ok but what do we DO" when it happens).

This seminar will propose to simulate calls and have judges answer. 3 or 4 (or more depending on the number of attendants) pair of Judges will assist me in playing out games of magic and playing characters. It will be prepared in advance (this one is NOT the random game that I helped introduced a few years ago) so that we can create tables by "theme".

1:20:00 PM

Slot 3b

Investigation (Advanced)

Mastering the basics may just require some time, but in order to further progress your investigation skills you need some advanced concepts. You'll find yourself studying collateral truths and one of Stinson's theorems to help you profile your subjects and better understand how to discover a possible cheater. Practical proof will be required!

Goal: 25 minutes presentation + 35 minutes workshop

2:20:00 PM

3:20:00 PM

Slot 4b

Workshop about reviews

Like the best way to learn how to improve reviews is with practice, this seminar propose to effectively write reviews. Alone then in small groups, judges will have short notes, identical to some we can bring from GPs, and will try to write constructive feedback from them. Then we will try to improve some of them with the whole group.

VENUE

The conference will take place in the Magic Shop in Bern. There is parking possibilities right next to the shop.

House of Cards GmbH

Landhausweg 13

3007 Bern

If the conference attacks too many judges (I'm an optimist), we will be able to rent a room able to host about 80 people in the center of Berne.

PRESENTING A SEMINAR

If you are interested in presenting a seminar please say so in your application and email me (jeremie.granat@gmail.com). if you are interested but need some ideas or a topic we can help you out.

Seminar could be focused on some skill or knowledge you got from your work or studies and you use during judging, on some knowledge or good practice you acquired about an aspect of the judge program, it could be the presentation of one of the projects you're working on, or even organizing a fun game to end the day with!

You don't need to be a world expert on the topic you plan to present, as long as you think you have something useful to share with the community.

Senior judges and candidates for leveling up in the judge program are encouraged to apply and present a seminar or workshop.

The seminar slides, hand-out and presenter sheet (whatever applies) will have to be sent to me for review at least 1 week before the conference.

CANCELATION OPTION

We will have to cancel the conference if we do not have enough presenters. I will try to inform everyone as soon as I can about cancelation plans.

FOILS

We will most probably have judge foils for every participant (only applicable to certified judges). However, attending the conference does not guaranty reception of foils. Active participation throughtout the day as well as constructive feedback about at least one seminar is mandatory.

TRANSPORTATION

Berne, even if it is the capital of Switzerland, has a very small airport and you will be hard pressed to find a flight directly to Berne itself. Coming by plane, you will need to either land in Zürich or Geneva and come to Berne by train. The train ticket between Zürich and Bern is about 45 Euros and between Geneva and Berne is probably more.

An alternative would be to come by bus. There are quite a few companies offering cheap bus rides directly to Berne from a lot of different location in Europe. As an example, Lyon - Berne would only cost 15€.

LODGING

There are a lot of good hotels in Berne but, being the capital (and in Switzerland), most of them are quite pricey. I found a youth hostel in the middle of Berne that offers a few different rooms (4,5,6 or 20 bed rooms). The prices range from 35€ to 50€ per nights and include a day ticket for free transportation in the city. Please fill out the form accordingly if you would like to reserve a bed, including date of arrival and departure as well as type of room. I will try to get a group offer for a better price.
