South West Area Conference #3

Hello and welcome to this, the third judge conference in the South West of the UK! 

I'd like to extend this invitation for everyone to attend this event, in the true spirit of learning, sharing knowledge with each other and meeting new people. 

Here's the information that you'll need:

Overall focus

We believe that we will be best served by attracting the largest and most diverse mix of Judges possible to our conference. Judges of all levels and candidates looking to join the Judge programme are encouraged to attend.

Applicants should be mindful of the national directive that sub-Regional (Area) conferences should focus on L1 Judges, and our need to address topics pertinent to the South West.

 Judge Foils

Only certified Judges who have registered on Judge Apps by the application deadline, Friday 5th May, will be eligible to receive foils for attendance/facilitating.

Location: Whipton Institute (Social Club), Whipton Village Road, Exeter, EX4 8AW

Transport and travel

The Whipton Institute is located a short car journey from the M5 (Junction 29 or 30), with a variety of local amenities in the immediate area. The venue is 2.6 miles from Exeter St Davids train station, 2.3 miles from Exeter Central train station, 1.7 miles from Exeter Bus Station and 0.4 miles from Polsloe Bridge railway station (on the Tarka line to North Devon). Stagecoach buses run fairly regularly in the area.

Parking is available at the venue. Please lift share where possible :)

Accommodation

For those thinking of staying overnight there are a number of Premier Inns located throughout the city, the Jury's Inn hotel in the city centre, and accommodation at the Exeter Arms where we are intending to dine after conference.

Facilitating

If you are interested in facilitating at this conference, you are more than welcome. You will have to apply to facilitate and will be notified if your application is successful at least four weeks before the conference. The conference cannot happen without the help of you, and your skills. If there is something that you are passionate about or something that you want to share, please indicate in your application.

Seminars are looking to be 45 minutes long, extended to an hour if necessary. We have the option of running two tracks, if there are enough people to facilitate. We know that people learn in different ways so we are looking for a variety of delivery methods e.g. seminar, group work, roleplay and simulations, not just traditional presentations.

We are seeking facilitators for the following topics (or something closely related), which reflect local priorities, and will hope to fill these before opening up to other topics:

• Being L1 in the NWO (NR)
• Tournament shortcuts (DM)
• MTR highlights and changes(RW)
• Judging as a customer service role(WH)
  
• Judging at Regular - nuances of the JAR, common sense vs consistency (GB)
  
• Dealing with "Serious Problems" (SH)
  
• Investigations and how to disqualify (PA)
  
• Regular REL roleplays and scenarios (SF/TR)
  

Evening Activities

There are plans for dinner in the evening, so please indicate in your application if you would like to attend, so that we have an idea of numbers.

Dinner will be at the Exeter Arms (Toby Carvery), Rydon Ln, Middlemoor, Exeter EX2 7HL.

Testing

There will be opportunity to test for L1 at the conference, but by arrangement only.
If you wish to test for L2, we hope to have L2 Norman RALPH attending to fill the role of L2 tester. Once confirmed we will seek details on your checklist completion.

If you want to test on the day then please include this in your application.

1-2-1 meetings

Our Area Captain, Phil, will be setting aside time for 1-2-1 meetings with all South West Judges attending Conference to understand your current thoughts, feelings, aspirations and suggestions on how we can improve moving forwards.
