I’m very excited to announce the Winter 2013 Northeast Judge Conference, which will be held at TJ Collectibles in Milford, MA on Saturday, December 14^th, 2013.  I want to thank Tom Shea for providing a venue for us; he is, as always, an ardent supporter of the Judge program.

What is a judge conference?

Judge Conferences are opportunities to meet and see other judges in and out of your area, to learn, to teach, to share your knowledge, and to take knowledge back to your communities.  Judges have new “tech” just like players do – unlike players, however, we don’t keep the tech secret.  During the conference, you’ll watch other judges present seminars and workshops about aspects of the judge program like tournament operations, scorekeeping, leadership, or a myriad of other possible topics.  It turns out fun also happens at conferences – I know I’ll be bringing my Commander decks and a draft set!

Can I go?

Of course you can!  The Judge Conference is open to anyone, regardless of Judge level.  Whether you’re just starting out on your journey toward certification or you’re a grizzled veteran, I guarantee there will be something here for you.  The only requirement is that you come ready to learn and share your knowledge and experiences, regardless of whether you present.  I expect everyone who attends to participate, even if it’s just by listening and internalizing new concepts and ideas. 

What’s the schedule?  Who’s presenting?

We don’t have a set schedule yet.  We’re looking to have about 6 30-45 minute “blocks” of time with two presentations going on alongside one another in each block.  As for who’s presenting, it could be you!  If you’re interested in presenting, please make sure to say so in your application – there will be questions about that, so answer them.  

Why should I go to this Judge Conference?

I’ve been working with Paul Baranay to get this conference set up along with our regional coordinator, Shawn Doherty.  I’ve discussed with both of them my vision for this conference – I want this to be something special.  To that end, I’m hoping to add more interactivity to our seminars, which I find are traditionally very lecture-oriented.  I think this can be one of the best Judge Conferences ever. 

Foil Support

Wizards of the Coast is graciously supporting this conference by providing some judge foils for attendees.  These will be given out based on the number of seminars attended.  If you want to receive foils, you need to pre-register for the conference through JudgeApps on or before Thursday, November 21^st.
