Event Information

Event Information

Winter is finally over and it's time for us judges to have a conference!

The Toronto Area judge conference will be held on Sunday, May 7th at the spacious, newly renovated Untouchables Sports & Gaming in a relatively decent area of Mississauga, Ontario.

Stay tuned for upcoming info for additional Canadian Judge Conferences in the coming months! The Canada Judge Conference project is working hard on upcoming conferences across the country.

Event Summary

Conferences are a great way to pick up valuable knowledge and skills relating to judging, as well as an excellent source of networking within the judge community. It's nice to be able to have familiar faces at GPs and other large events, and conferences are an amazing way to meet your fellow judges.

Over the course of a conference, you can expect to see various presentations on a variety of topics relating to judging and interacting with players/organizers. Attendees are encouraged to participate in active discussion and to share experiences.

Foil Support

As an appreciation for your contribution to the prosperity and growth of the Magic Judge Program, foils will be distributed at the conference to attendees. Only judges who are active certified judges, L1 or higher as of the application deadline (Apr 6) and who have actively participated in the full array of seminars will be eligible to receive a foil packet at the conference. More information on the foil packet is available on the Judge Conferences Blog.

If your judge level on JudgeApps is incorrectly showing L0, please ensure your Regional Coordinator emails Kris Burningham to update your level before the application deadline.

Registration

If you would like to attend the conference, please submit an application with a short summary of yourself and experience as a judge. Feel free to also include which skills you would like to learn/improve and how attending the conference will positively affect your community.

Acceptances will be prioritized towards active Canadian Judges living in Canada. Space is fairly limited for this conference and unfortunately everyone who applies may not be accepted. Please put extra care into your cover letter and application in order to detail how this conference will help you grow as a judge.

Uncertified judges and non-Canadian judges are still encouraged to apply.

Applications for this conference will only be accepted through Thursday April 6th at 11:59PM. Acceptances and final conference details will be posted very shortly after.

Schedule:

Saturday Night (Optional) — Optional Dinner/Activity (Details to follow shortly). There are a couple escape rooms/theatres/cool stuff in the immediate vicinity of the venue. We'll figure out something good!

Sunday: Conference Day: 10am-1pm will be spent attending conferences/breakout sessions. 1p-2pm Lunch break to follow (There are McDonalds, Subway, Baskin Robbins, Gino's Pizza, Shawarma, Chinese and Crepe restaurants located within the mall). 2pm-5pm will continue with conferences/breakout sessions. Following the conference there will be some time to play some EDH/draft before dinner. Dinner and Foil distribution will be held at a local pub/restaurant TBD.

The venue is fairly large and has space to do both group seminars and breakout sessions depending on the number of presentations. Free Wifi is available and the event is able to be livestreamed for remote judges!

Presentations and Volunteering

If you would like to present a seminar or volunteer to help out with the conference in any way, please fill out the attached Google Form before the April 6th application deadline.

Seminars should be approximately 50 minutes long and should involve the audience actively. Role play, trivia, and other interesting activities are encouraged.

Testing

Judge candidates wishing to test for L1 can test at the conference. Please note that you must contact Kris Burningham before April 30th to arrange testing.

L2 testing will be available if a tester is available.

Please note that certifying for L1 at this conference will not make you eligible to receive a foil packet.

Accommodations

Please note in your application if you require accommodation. A hotel block will be set up before the application deadline.
