Event Information

What is a satellite judge conference you ask? It's a real conference with live in person presentations but also with streaming of presentations live from a conference in Toronto at the same time. The idea is to promote interaction with judge communities on opposite sides of the country.

The Victoria satellite judge conference will be held on Sunday, May 7th at the University of Victoria in the David Strong Building room C116.

Schedule

Saturday night (optional) - social event downtown Swan's Pub and/or Victoria Board Game Cafe (details to follow)

Early Sunday (optional/online only) - the following will be streamed from Toronto live, you can join the Discord chat room to discuss, and/or you can watch them later (they will be recorded):

7:30am - 8:30am - Customer Service with William Van Veen
8:30am - 9:30am - Magic Jeopardy with Ryan Zacharias

Sunday on site/official event:

9:00am - 9:30am - Getting settled and introductions. Following talks all streamed from Toronto.
9:30pm - 10:30am - Priority with Philip Chan
10:30am - 11:00am - BREAK (taking lunch orders; Judge's Tower)
11:00am - noon - Inclusivity in Magic and why your LGS needs it with Amanda Stevens
noon - 1:00pm - Slow Play with Chris McGuire
1:00pm - 2:00pm - Journey to L2 with Kris Burningham (for L1s)
2:00pm - 2:30pm - BREAK (coordinating foil distribution for people not attending dinner) / end of streaming content from Toronto
2:30pm - 3:30pm - Choose your own Judgeventure with Niko Skarveldt
3:30pm - 4:30pm - Judge/Player Interactions with Jeremy White (open to the public)

Sunday evening (optional) - Judge dinner/draft/etc. on campus and/or Smuggler's Cove Pub

Event Summary

Conferences are a great way to pick up valuable knowledge and skills relating to judging, as well as an excellent source of networking within the judge community. It's nice to be able to have familiar faces at GPs and other large events, and conferences are an amazing way to meet your fellow judges.

Over the course of a conference, you can expect to see various presentations on a variety of topics relating to judging and interacting with players/organizers. Attendees are encouraged to participate in active discussion and to share experiences.

Foil Support

As an appreciation for your contribution to the prosperity and growth of the Magic Judge Program, foils will be distributed at the conference to attendees. Only judges who are active certified judges, L1 or higher as of the application deadline (April 9) and who have actively participated in the full day of seminars will be eligible to receive a foil packet at the conference. More information on the foil packet is available on the Judge Conferences Blog.

If your judge level on JudgeApps is incorrectly showing L0, please ensure your Regional Coordinator emails Trevor Murdock to update your level before the application deadline.

Registration

If you would like to attend the conference, please submit an application with a short summary of yourself and experience as a judge. Feel free to also include which skills you would like to learn/improve and how attending the conference will positively affect your community.

Acceptances will be prioritized towards active Canadian Judges living in Canada. Space is limited conference and unfortunately everyone who applies may not be accepted. Please put extra care into your cover letter and application in order to detail how this conference will help you grow as a judge.

Uncertified judges and non-Canadian judges are still encouraged to apply.

Applications for this conference will only be accepted through Sunday April 9th at 11:59PM. Acceptances and final conference details will be posted very shortly after.

Schedule:

Saturday Night (Optional) — Optional evening activity — Canadian Highlander/Judge's Tower/Commander/draft perhaps (Details to follow).

Sunday: Conference Day: 10am-noon will be spent attending seminars that are also open to the public, topics determined by player interest. Noon-1pm Lunch break on campus (there are limited food options on the weekend on campus - a runner will be arranged to take orders from a local restaurant as well). 1pm-5pm will continue with conferences/breakout sessions: a combination of live streamed from Toronto and in person seminars. Dinner and Foil distribution will be held at a local pub/restaurant TBD.

The venue is fairly large and has space to do both group seminars and breakout sessions depending on the number of presentations.

Presentations and Volunteering

If you would like to present a seminar or volunteer to help out with the conference in any way, please fill out the following Google Form before the April 9th application deadline: https://goo.gl/forms/poobhqd2R9wZDK622

Seminars should be approximately 50 minutes long and should involve the audience actively. Role play, trivia, and other interesting activities are encouraged.

Testing

Judge candidates wishing to test for L1 or L2 can test at the conference if a tester is available. Please note that you must contact Trevor Murdock before April 30th to arrange testing.

Accommodations

Please note in your application if you require accommodation. Depending on the number of people requiring accomodation, a shared room may be organized at the University, or billeting may be arranged.
