Event Information

8th Annual BeNeLux Judge Conference

22-24 June 2018

The conference will start on Friday evening at 18.00 hours and end on Sunday evening at 18.00 hours.

This year we will be staying at "Arbeid - Adelt" in De Moer, The Netherlands.
For details, see the venue information.
Of course, once again our weekend will be filled with seminars, workshops, discussions and free play time.
There is a maximum capacity of 64 attendees, so please apply sooner, rather than later.

The schedule looks as follows;
Friday
from 18.00:      Arrival
19.00 - 21.00:  Dinner
21.30 - ??.??:  Free time

Saturday
08:30 - 09:45     Breakfast
10:00     State of the Community                Richard Drijvers
Our Regional Coordinator informs us about the state of the judge community, it's goals, it's growth, and it's challenges for the coming year.
11:00    Boardstates                                 Mark Dragstra
11:00    Teaching Magic to new Players   Floris De Baerdemaeker
Sometimes people accidentally wander into game stores. What to do? Teach them Magic of course! But what exactly do you tell them? When do you talk about the stack? Should you show them your funky commander deck immediately? And why do some of them come back and why do some of them stay away? In this seminar, we will have a look at the first contact with the enemy new player.

12:00    Lunch
13:30    Investigations                                  Jurgen Baert
An easy three-step technique. I need to figure out if it’s three steps or four, but I’ll get that sorted before the conference. Promise...

15:00    Resolving Spells/Abilities                  Toby Hazes
What are the steps for resolving a spell/ability exactly? Which instructions happen sequentially and which happen simultaneously? Why does Panglacial Wurm exist? In this seminar we'll be taking a closer look at performing the actions written on the cards.
15:00    How write a DQ report?                   Dustin de Leeuw
So you followed Jurgen's seminar, conducted an investigation, and actually disqualified a player. Now what? How to write your DQ report in a way that best helps the Player Investigation Committee to reach a fair verdict?
16:15    Quizzzzz                                           Jonas Drieghe + Michiel van den Bussche
17:15 – 18:15    End of Day 1 Dinner (prep, clean up, etc.)

Sunday
before 10:00     Breakfast
10:00    Double Faced Cards                        Anniek van der Peijl
This seminar will cover everything to do with both sides of a card. Morph, Manifest, and Double-Faced cards all have pretty interesting characteristics. What are the properties of these cards while in the library or hand, on the stack, and on the battlefield? What happens when they get moved, morphed, or copied? And don't even get me started on Meld…
10:00    Learn to Talk                                    Niels Viaene
The seminar will touch on a few bases for thinking about how people talk and listen to each other and how to improve these through some easy to understand pillars.
11:15    Hidden Card Error                           Klaus Lassacher
This seminar will cover HCE with the definition, the philosophy, some examples and a small excurse to LEC.
A part of the seminar will also be how to use the learned with some group examples to check how to identify if it is HCE/LEC and to find the appropriate fix.
11:15    Card Alterations                              Jona Bemindt
This seminar will go over what makes a card a legal magic card to play, and what kind of things people might, but shouldn't do to them to spice things up a bit. After this seminar you will be able to tell a player that their cards are fine (or not!) to play with confidence, while still keeping the rules (who could have guessed there were rules?!) in mind. There will also be pretty pictures!
13:00    Lunch
14:30    The Art of War                                 Michiel van den Bussche
This seminar provides you with in depth information regarding the Combat Phase. We will look at the different steps and all the interesting things that happen there. Afterwards there is room for practice. No Judges were harmed in the making of this seminar.
14:30    Shortcuts                                        Olivier Wattel
Why do we need them? Is Magic possible without shortcuts?
15.30    Wrap Up                                        Richard Drijvers
16.00 - 18.00: Clean Up
18.00  End of Conference
