Event Information

Hello, Judges!

On behalf of the Northeast Region, I'm pleased to announce NYC's first ever Judge Tournament Qualifier! On February 18th, Kings Games will be hosting a Judge Tournament Qualifier for JC's to test at and L1's to receive Competitive Rules Enforcement Level experience.

Introduction

This is a teaching, networking, and social event for judges of all levels and anyone interested in the Magic Judge Program. There are no restrictions on attendance based on level or region - everyone is welcome to attend. Please help us plan for your attendance by applying to this event, or withdrawing if you are no longer able to make it.

As you may know a Judge Tournament Qualifier (JTQ) is a special type of conference mainly focused on training L2 candidates. We will be simulating a Comp REL tournament with the help of multiple volunteers acting as players, Team Leads, and a Head Judge. Over the course of the day, we will go through each facet of a Comp REL event. Participants will be rotating through roles as the various teams. They will learn how to prepare for a Comp REL tournament, how to make announcements, how to handle deck checks with actual decks to check, how to handle the floor, and lots of feedback on investigations and rulings.

For more information about JTQ's, please see the JTQ Announcement here:  (https://blogs.magicjudges.org/conferences/2017/06/26/announcing-judge-tournament-qualifiers-jtqs/)

Who are JTQs for?

If you are a L1 who is seriously working on L2 and are behooved to find more CREL experience and network with local L2's that are in your area, this JTQ is for YOU!

Many L1 judges regularly want to judge at Competitive REL events, but they just lack opportunities to work with a L2 to get a recommendation, and to take the test. JTQs are exactly the kind of opportunity those judges need.

Aside from the candidates, if you are L2, L2T, or L3 who wants to help with your regional L2 judge development, JTQs will require a lot of mentors to work with the candidates. This is a great way for you to help out, too!

All L2s who apply will be considered "Players" for the event and their role will be to help create situations for the L1 judges to adjudicate.  This role is foil supported.

How to Register

If you are interested in attending, please submit a cover letter as though you were applying to a large competitive event (ex. GP, Open, Nationals, etc.) button up above! We will accept applications on a constant basis so that you can quickly gain access to the event forums. We expect the forums to be a helpful resource for coordinating travel and schedule information regarding roles.

Applying for roles:

The role of Head Judge has been filled by Nataniel Bael

We will be accepting applications for:

    Deck Check Team Lead

As a sign of appreciation, Wizards of the Coast allows us to offer attendees a selection of promotional foil cards. The exact packet is not known at this time, but will include four promotional cards. These foils are available if you meet the following criteria:

Attendance

If you are interested but not 100% sure you’re able to attend, please apply and we can withdraw you from the event should you find out that you’re not able to attend. Due to short open window, we will be accepting a limited amount of late applications based on expected attendance.

"Judges" are expected to wear either official Judge shirts or  a black polo or button-up shirt which should remain tucked in and buttoned to the next to the top button or higher, an undershirt, black belt, black pants, black socks, and comfortable, close-toed shoes.

The store requires that all people who access the playspace must spend at least $5 on supplies, singles, sealed product, or tournament entry fees.  Please come with the intention of spending $5 on a few cards you need to make everything go over smoothly.
