Grand Prix Trial limited by TO??

Is it legal to limit attendance to a GPT to 8 players??

Not caring about customer service (is a matter of a TO). If a TO asks us to close tournament once 8 players show up, is it fine??

Thank you!!

My understanding of all tournaments is that the TO can restrict attendance due to fire codes or other limitations, but such restrictions have to be announced prior to the day of the event.

If they're restricting it arbitrarily during enrollment, I'd be a lot more interested as to their reasoning.

I believe that “have to” is an overstatement. TO's really should advertise limits on their events for customer service purposes. But failing to post your limits before the event is run doesn't mean you have to accept a number of players you are unable to accommodate.

I was presuming that the question was actually driving at the issue of TOs who want to hold “private” GPTs for their local players.

If a venue only has space for 8 players, or fire code restriction to that number, then obviously that's permissible (if a poor choice of venue). But is it OK if the TO is arbitrarily limiting it in order to advantage “their” players?

Assuming the reason is no more free space available (due to another simultaneous event) :)

Or not wanting to add 4 hours to an event by adding only 1-2 people

Not adding additional rounds is not a permitted reason to restrict attendance.
