Yes, this is a quite common issue these days. Note that Warning - the standard penalty for Marked Cards - is usually upgraded to Game Loss in these cases, because this very specific pattern could be easily spotted (and the information used) by the player.

Jace's Ingenuity

A few days ago, a player asked me exactly this - can I use a low-res photocopy of Jace instead of having to physically flip it all the times?
I answered "Always check with the HJ of your tournament. Personally, as long as the copy is low-res, so clearly a fake, I think you cannot cause confusion, and I would be OK with that".

At what point (if any) do we consider that the player is violating Wizards copyright?

Never. We are not WotC's lawyers, and so we aren't qualified to make that
determination, and it isn't our job to prosecute their IP for them.

I would suggest he talk to the HJ before the tournament so he doesn't end up in an unhappy situation. If we are discussing it as judges, it means it might be a closer call than anyone wants to deal with during the tournament. Better safe than sorry.

The important thing to me is that the “card” itself cannot possibly be used in the deck as a fifth jace. Remember that most cheaters we catch are cheaters of opportunity. Something as easy as changing sleeves is not good enough of a safeguard. I would suggest to him that in the future he not use the Magic back. Pokemon cards make great tokens. :lol:

In a similar manner, what about using a real fith Jace (in a different sleeve) instead of flipping one of those in the deck?

Back side dfcs in different sleeves are explicitly allowed by the MTR.
