Because they had an undue advantage in their previous matches due to their
partner's shenanigans.

Yes, Ivan, people join tournaments to play… not to be forced to drop
before they've had their fun. ;)

(But really, different players have different motivations. There are many
aspects to tournaments. The game is fun, and the game is competitive at the
same time. You can't ascribe your idealistic thinking to all players. It's
disingenuous to state that players pay significant amounts of money to
enter a tournament with significant prizes just to have fun. Much more fun
can be had for free at the kitchen table.)

I understand that you point… but i don't talk about the motivation of the players… i talk about the motivation of the entire game… as a game, the main target is fun. If we allow an incoplete team to continue playing… we are harm the esence of the game itself. And the game attemps to be the more inclusive as can, but thats not means than we can play with an incomplete deck… or an incomplete team…

About a DQ player, I think than we are all agree that It's means the entire team must leave the tournament…
About a player with a emergency that need leave before a game, or durning a game, if the player can return before the next round… i don't see much problems (Team1Player1 concedes… t1p2 and t1p3 continues playing).
The problems begins when the player don´t return or lost all life's sings from him/her. Do the same as when in a single competition a player don't show: drop him/her.
In this point the teammates was the more interested in found their teammate. wait a bit, try they call, etc… but if He/She don't show… drop.

Thank you Andrew for pointing this out. I do think this clears up the grey area nicely, but the problem here is that the bold part of this text is often left unenforced in a team setting because it is not something that judges realize they need to do.

There is no space on the slip to just mark one person as dropped, and I believe that judges (and scorekeepers?) are not accustomed to this having an effect on the match. The match will still be entered with the appropriate wins. It is rather strange to have a match slip that says 2-1 with a drop for the winning team due to tardiness.

Also - if a team sits down across from another team and says “our Player C had an emergency and had to run out for an hour. You guys get a free win.” I don't think many players call a judge here. I doubt this is going to be readily enforceable.

Finally - I want to point out that strict enforcement of this policy means any team that has a member that is legitimately 11 minutes late to their match will be auto-dropped. This may create more customer dissatisfaction than is necessary when those teams are scrambling to understand why they are not posted in the next rounds' pairings.

So, I think a few interesting thoughts have been shared, but I also think we know what policy currently says, and we will all enforce it as written. It's probably time to bring this one to a close.

I did ask someone at Wizards for any comments on why, since a lot of people were wondering about the basis for the policy. No earth-shattering revelations: “because it's a 3-player format” is all we need to understand.

It's been pointed out that Russell's note (re: a team being dropped if one of them is 11 minutes late) could use a bit of clarification; just because it made perfect sense to me, doesn't mean it will to all.

If one or more members of a team are tardy by at least 10 minutes, the team will be dropped; this is not unique to a team event, the same thing happens to any player in an individual event who is at least 10 minutes late. And, just like individual events, if the full team reports to the scorekeeper before the start of the next round, the drop can be reversed, and the team can play in the next round.
