One Too Many - BRONZE

Welcome back friends!  This week we will be tackling our first bronze .  Since these answers tend to be a little more cut and dry please submit your answers via the google form rather than replying to the thread.  Good Luck and happy judging!

You are the Head Judge at a Modern 10k run at Competitive REL. It is round 7 of 8 and Andy is 3-2-1 for the day out of contention for top 8. He is stuck on one land on turn two, casts a Preordain, puts both cards on the bottom and draws a card. Sadly Andy doesn’t draw a land and passes the turn. Nancy plays her third land and asks “cards in hand?” Andy counts and says “oops…8 I forgot to discard!” The players call for a judge. What do you do?

One Too Many - BRONZE

Thanks to everyone who participated this week we received many great answers that were pretty much spot on.  Good job keep it up!

Andy receives a Warning for a Game Rules Violation. Andy discards a card now. Nancy will receive a warning for Failure to Maintain Game State (FtMGS).

Follow up:

Andy has committed a Games Rules Violation and will receive a warning. We *do not* have to back up here as this is one of our allowed partial fixes. Andy will choose a card in their hand and discards now. Note it doesn’t matter if their hand has changed since the error.

Nancy received their FtMGS as they didn’t catch the issue immediately.  We have moved through the upkeep, draw, and into the main phase through multiple priority passes. As a reminder, FtMGS doesn’t upgrade and serves both as a reminder to a player to pay more attention and for the judges to track for repeat issues that may require attention over the course of the event.

I do want to highlight one great answer below ( I didn’t record names; great job if this is you!).  Specifically, this answer was spot on in being correct and took the forethought to think about the players reactions to the rulings.  Soft skills are important too!

Issue Andy a Warning for Game Play Error--Game Rule Violation and Nancy a Warning for Game Play Error--Failure to Maintain Game State. Have Andy discard a card now and instruct the players to continue playing.

Failing to discard a card falls under one of the GRV partial fixes, so there's no backup that needs to be done. Since Nancy didn't call out the error before untapping, drawing and playing a land, she gets a warning for FtMGS; if Nancy seems unhappy about getting a warning "just for pointing out her opponent's mistake", you can remind her that this type of warning can never get upgraded to a game loss.
