Swiss only FNM tournament, last round id/prize split decision.

My TO has a problem with this recurring scenario, and is asking me for a ruling. I need second, third and more opinions.

Swiss only FNM 1st place wins 10 packs, 2nd place wins 5 packs. Last round there are only two guys at X-0, others are at X-1 and below. The following conversation takes place.

A: Lets id to ensure our top2 places in the standings.
B: Agreed.
A: Now that we've drawn the match, let's play to determine who gets 1st and who gets the second place prize.
B: OK.
They play a match of Magic, one of the players wins, they report an ID and split their prizes according to the result.

Since they are at X-0-1 they are out of the reach of other players, making them, and the TO uncomfortable.

I know that this was discussed before, however the search function on my Judge Apps seems broken, an I haven't found anything close to this scenario manually. Is this legal? Any advice on avoiding bribery/wagering in this situation (for the players). Any suggestions for the TO?

Hi,

Here are a few threads dealing with the problem:

I'll just quote Uncle Scott here:
TOs need to adhere to the MTR, which allows Intentional Draws, and should not ban them for any sanctioned event.

If you know of a TO who has a similar stance re: IDs, or other parts of policy they don't like, please encourage them to:

  • discuss it with their WPN rep;
  • as suggested above, find ways to encourage the behaviors they prefer (instead of banning legal behaviors)
  • discuss the philosophy with you, to hopefully better understand why that behavior is allowed
