Oh, the Foreigners...

How do you suggest to manage multi-lingual players at a Competitive event?
What can you do if you hear foreign players chatting in their native language during a game? Or if someone reports you such a behaviour?
What if they start answering your questions by telling you that they were just making arrangements for lunch, and you can't obviously tell if they're telling the truth or not?

I can guess that at a big event (GP or better) you are well likely to have a multi-national and multi-lingual Judge staff and you can easily call for some valuable help. But it can easily happen that the players span through different nationalities and languages (especially in big cities and in border areas) and I can see the potential for an abuse.

You do the best you can. Generally, if they're spectating a game, I'll ask them to keep silent. If a player in the match is talking with a spectator, I'll ask them to either stop, or speak in a language that the opponent can also understand.

If they ask why, I say that it's only fair on the opponent - they shouldn't have to worry about whether there is any outside assistance going on.

If someone reports people, I'll do the same as above. Although if the match is over then there isn't much I can do if I can't find them.

If they claim they're just talking about lunch then I'll take them at their word. There is little you can do unless someone witnesses something and tells you explicitly. And 9 times out of 10 they ARE talking about lunch.

In short, I generally ask people to remain silent, and hopefully that avoids any problems.

If you don't believe them you could take the spectator and player aside separately and ask them where they were talking about going or what they were thinking of eating (as I learned from one of my recent tournament reports).
