Can not find a person to promote to level 1 on Judge Center

Hello,

I have certified a new level 1 judge this last sunday but I can not find him on the judge center, using his name or DCI Number (i have double checked his DCI number with him).

Here are his infos:

Name: Joël MANDON
DCI: 2112 552 792

What are the options to fix this ?

Thank you in advance.

Julien

Well, I don't have all the answers, but I can tell you that this is an
invalid DCI#. I suggest having the candidate log onto their Wizards
account and check the DCI # there.

His DCI number and name should be on the test itself. Did you generate a
personalized exam for him?

He even sent me a picture of his DCI card with that number on it.

I will only add that he's not waiting for his account to be approved by one of the admins. So, perhaps he didn't event create one yet?

I have used this:

Paper (Generic)—The exam will contain a random selection of questions. (For mass testing only.)

I thought about him having maybe never created it but i have seen him playing in sanctioned tournaments before.

Generic test, as the description says, should be used for mass testing (like in rare cases at GPs or other big events) only. Please use Paper (Personalised) next time.

About playing - yes, he has a DCI number, but that doesn't mean that he has a judge apps account. He needs to create one. Ask him to go to http://apps.magicjudges.org and register.

As for the actual problem with the DCI # not being in the Judge Center, I
think you should contact Wizards about the number, since that seems to be
the issue. If the judge has a Wizards account, he should be able to verify
the correct number online.

The issue is that the DCI# isn't valid at all. If his DCI# were in the membership database, then the Judge Center would have been able to find him by the use of the DCI#, whether when the exam were generated or the review entered. (This also works with investigation reports, as the subject doesn't need to be registered with the Judge Center.) It is very possible that DCI# wasn't properly registered and the paperwork wasn't processed. Not sure how there isn't an error with WER…

That being said, use of generic exams is generally not encouraged when you know the candidate's DCI#. Generic exams should be reserved for “walk-up” testing when you have no advance contact with the candidate. (Edit: In which case, a single generic exam should be used for multiple people.)

OK, first thing first: a quick look up on WER renders a very likely match
for your candidate. I'll contact you privately with the details.

About creating generic tests: as others have pointed out you can read on
Judge Center these are only suitable for mass testing, and that is not the
case here. It's important to create personalized tests, so to make sure
candidates have not seen the content on their exams previously.

I had to test 5 people and i assumed “mass testing” applied.

I probably read the wrong document (http://blogs.magicjudges.org/francais/2014/12/26/guide-detude-pour-preparer-le-niveau-1/) as it was linked on a french judge forum and there was nothing mentioned about it there.

I'm sorry about that, it was my first time testing people for level 1, i will make sure to use the personalized ones next time.

Yes, it didn't explicitly say to use personalized exams instead of generic
exams, but it did say:

- Use Candidate’s DCI Number during Test Creation

which is a good tip for all aspects of the Judge Center

To provide a bit of information on the difference between the “Paper (Generic)” exam versus the others: This exam is used when you do have an instance of mass testing such as yours. What it does is allow you to generate a single exam that you then use for all the candidates you test. This allows you (and other judges) the ability to streamline proctoring the exam to multiple people and then grading those exams. Because you don't have to create many exams that could accidentally be administered incorrectly.

So, yes, your circumstances allowed for the opportunity to use a single generic exam to test all five candidates.

The other two exam types are personalized, meaning they apply just for that candidate and you need that person's DCI# when generating the exam. As the exam is generated, the Judge Center's algorithm analyzes those questions the candidate has already seen in that exam pool, and populates the exam with questions the candidate HASN'T seen. This makes it important to generate personalized exams when possible, to use with a candidate who may have previously taken the exam.

So, even in a mass testing situation, if you have the candidate's DCI# (because they apply to test beforehand) you should generate a personalized exam. It's hardly the end of the world to use a generic exam, it's just preferred to use personalized exams whenever possible.

I totally understand that I should use the personalized option and will do so from now on.

David messaged me what seems to be the best possible reason for my problem and I am now waiting for the candidate answer before doing anything.

Thank you to everybody for correcting me on the test version to be used and helping me with my troubles.
