JUDGES! I need your input!

I am revisting my old GP player guides, and this time I would like to hear from you about what kind of questions you often hear from players at GPs, as well as common mistakes they make*, so we can target them as accurately as possible.

*I'm not really referring to game-play mistakes, but event-related mistakes (such as not knowing how to fill in a slip, not knowing how to understand pairings, when to call a judge, tracking lives on dice, how to fill in a deck list etc. Having said that, if you've seen a GPE a looot then I'm all ears).

Cheers!

1. Assuming that the event (especially side event) won't start on time.
2. Assuming they know where pairings will be posted.
3. Not knowing which event they're playing in.
4. Missing the beginning of the round.
5. When they are late (e.g. everyone is seated) - ask a judge to help you
to your table.
6. Get new sleeves, shuffle before sleeving.
7. Bring a printed decklist (for constructed).

-TURN IN YOUR MATCH RESULTS SLIP IF YOU WIN THE MATCH!!!!!!!!!!!

(don't hand it to your opponent, don't roll it up in your playmat)

-When you decide to drop, please mark the results slip or visit the scorekeeping table to sign the Drop List.

-If you need to use the restroom at the beginning of a round, tell a judge (and get the judge's name if possible). Or wait until you find your seat, then ask a judge for permission. You'll be given a time extension.

  • When finding your seats for the player meeting, check both columns.
  • If there's an online pairings option, use it. You'll have less walking, players without smartphones will have less crowds at the board, and we can all go home sooner.
  • Unless a judge directs you to ask the scorekeeper, there's probably someone else who can help you better than the scorekeeper.
  • When you finish your match, the first thing you should do is sign the slip. You and your opponent can discuss how the game could have gone differently after that's done.

Most common questions I get:

Where do I take this slip to?

Are there any places to eat around here?

Where is table number X?

Where is event Y at?

Can I go to the bathroom?

Do I have time to go smoke a cigarette?

What are the prizes for Event Z?

More and more, we're seeing people that are new to, or at least relatively unfamiliar with Comp REL. These things can no longer be assumed of GP players:
  • Announce all life total changes, and record them on paper.
  • Don't do something random (roll dice or flip over cards) to decide who wins a game or match.
  • Don't offer your opponent anything to concede to, or draw with you.
  • Judges want you to call them, any time you have any concern, question, or uncertainty. If you're uncomfortable talking in front of your opponent, you can ask to step away with the judge.

I also wish there was some way to help the players who need 30-40 (!) minutes to register a sealed pool and 60 minutes to build… that's probably outside the scope of this, huh?
