I haven't found it anywhere, so I hope someone here does know the answer:
Is it allowed to run trial events for FNM tournament which award byes?

No.

Two types of competitive sanctioned events can have byes awarded: GPs and special events that you have to talk to your WPN rep to organise (and you need to be that highest level of store to run such events).

Also you don't want to do that for FNM anyway. Running trials towards byes at a big event is for the more competitive players and should be run with competition in mind. FNM is for kicking back and having fun. Try to not confuse the two.

Seems counter-productive. I go to FNM to play magic… why would I want to earn a chance to not play magic?
