Grand Arbiter - Android app for judges, built by a judge (feedback wanted)

Hi everyone,

I'm Alejandro, L1 from Spain, but also I'm an Android developer. I've been working on building a judging app that would fit my wants, and none on the market did as I wanted (either by design or functionality), so I did my own. I'm not going to tell you, I don't have all the time in the world, so the development has been boosted using AI, either on the development process or the design process, but NOT on the content.

The app does not reinvent the wheel, the main functionalities it has is what, I think, everyone is expecting as a bare minimum:

  • Offline documents: Holds CR, MTR, IPG and JAR documents offline. It has links between rules, so if you find a reference in a rule, you can click it and it will lead yo to the proper rule (and same with glossary terms).
  • Oracle card search (offline too): No mystery here, just a card search functionality.
  • Draft timers: Support for your typical draft, but also for 2HG and even Team Rochester. The default settings are the ones in the MTR, but you can change them if you want to.
  • Judge call timer: This is the thing I was missing about other apps that I wanted this to have, it's simple, but it's been useful for me, it's just a simple timer for when you get a call on a table, just tracking how much time you've spent there.
  • Deck counter: Again, not a mystery, a simple deck counter.
  • Quick references: This is also something I was missing on other apps, although some of them have some "quick references" section, none allowed me to customize that, so that's what I did. For starters you have some examples predefined on the app, like order of layers, or steps to cas a spell, but you also have the option the references you want, just create a new "quick reference", look for the rule (or rules) you want to add, and that's it, you have now your quick reference to whatever rule you usually look for (supports all 4 official documents).

The app is totally free and holds absolutely no adds, and there's not a single place on the app that allows you to pay in any way, I did this for fun, I am not intending to earn anything from this.

Now, why I see this app as and advantage over the others? Well, because I did it, that means that I'm listening to any feedback you have, and I am willing to implement all that you can suggest that the app could be missing (if it's not a crazy thing, of course).

At this point to might be asking yourselves "why is this such and amazing and cool app not on iOS?". Well, because I'm not an iOS developer, I have some contacts that are somehow interested in developing this on iOS, but again, this is a free project, so you know, that means less motivation in general and bla bla. My idea is to bring it to iOS at some point, but I won't be making any promises, sorry for the iOS community.

I'm going to drop you the link of the app so you have it:

Again, if you have any kind of suggestion, drop a comment, or if you want to contact me privately, you can too, send me a DM and we'll talk.

Thanks for your time :)

Sounds interesting, but I think you've selected (I think it's a default or misleadingly named) option that locks your app from being installed on 3rd party firmwares.

I'd link to an instruction on how to select the sane option, but I don't have any apps to publish to explore the settings and search engines only tell me about how to side load apps (which is a related but oposite challenge). If you find the option I'd love to have a description to share with the next app developer who I need to request this off (you aren't the first)

You are right, good catch. There's an option on the integrity check on the Play Console to disable 3rd party installments, I've now turned that off so the app should be able to be installed on 3rd party firmwares (it should not be risky as the app does not save any personal data at all). But just have in mind that the app handles in-app updates (basically, when there's a new version and you enter the app, an update window is shown), but this won't work in 3rd party firmwares.
