Has anyone tried to run this in an event?

My ideas is something as it's used in college. for instance, the sealed decklist could have 5 circles with (0,1,2,3 or other) to count the number of each card in each player's deck and pool and afterwards using a scaner to read all the results and back them up in a pc or two.

I haven't tried it myself but in large tournaments as GPs this might prove great value. For the Consturted tournaments i was thinking of a code consisting of a number, color and edition to distinguis all cards.

I understand that there are many innconvinients in trying something like this, such as the costs of having scaners and laptops in the tournament as well as explaining players how to complete them. However, with online registration, i think this kind of idea might have a shot.

I would be really intrested in any kind of expermients you have ran with something similar to this.

Sounds like a really interesting idea! I wouldn't mind using a bubble sheet just to end handwriting confusion. I'd be curious to see how this looks.

Keep in mind you need to record both your pool and played cards. Maybe you fill in two bubbles on each row? You always know the bigger one is the pool and the smaller is the played. That could be a bit confusing, but it's a fun brainstorming exercise.

Edit: This would potentially allow internationalized decklists as well. If it all goes into a computer, it can spit them back out in whatever language.

I long for the day when image recognition gets to the point where we can just lay out the cards and snap a photo.

I did a bit of research on reading hand-written decklists a couple of months back, and the impression I got is that handwriting recognition technology isn't quite there yet. In our case, we're greatly helped by the fact that decklists use a very limited “dictionary” (i.e. 15k or so card names), but this probably isn't enough of a help. I would predict that something like this could be a very real possibility in 5 years or so.

In the meantime, your idea of encoding cards in some way and using bubble sheets is an interesting one…

I wasnt thinking in handwriting, i actually was thinking in a code
consisiting in editioon color rarity and first leter of name in english or
something like that. Make sure its enough to garantee uniquness but that is
easily completed with a multiple choice paper such as used in schools. I
have read about them and they are fairly easy to acquire

I am not sure of the state of ocr right now, but I am adamantly opposed to
reinventing the wheel.

Cards from all recent sets have a code and unique number. Using numbers
should be much easier to decipher.

Also, I have an app that lets me take a picture of a card and it will tell
me the name. That helps me a lot with older Korean cards. Possibly port
that technology?

Last, but not least, do we want to kill more trees? If the dream version of
WER ever sees light of day, players would be able to use an app to register
and build pools. I don't think the day us far away when requiring a
smartphone would not be at all onerous.

I arrived home an hour after replaying and saw the edition number, that
should make it a pice of cake.for standard and modern. That`s a big first
step

Google goggle, can find cards using the image, if we use something like this, we can easly check a deck very fast.

I have tested Goggles a fair bit, and it's far from 100%.

Maybe in a year or two…

Going back to the bubble-sheet idea, I might mock one up in Photoshop if there's some interest. Let me know what you think.

It is very interesting and I tried a few time about it in the past.

I think it is possible to make OCR deck-list for limited and constructed.
but it will give players many work and trouble.

In next season GP, Registration of the day was lost.
so many players entry　with online,
so it is chance to get deck list with online.

if all players deck list is correct with online, nobody check deck list.
and wizards can get many date.
