Technology Judge Project - Looking for Feedback on Desired Features

I am a soon to be senior at Virginia Tech in the Computer Science program and one of our capstone requirements is to create a product for a community that we care about. My first thought was some new technology for the judge program.

In my sophomore year, my friend and I created an iOS MTG App for a class. The app is called MTG Master and is still on the app store and is linked below.

https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/mtg-master/id1104434527?mt=8

It is extremely rough but with a lot of work done on that, my immediate thought would be the construction of a free MTG Judge App for iOS, similar to what Judge Core is for Android. I am not locked into this idea, it just seems to be the easiest for me since I've already done a great deal of work that can be ported over.

So, the reason I made this thread. I am looking for feedback on this idea before I lock this idea in at the end of the semester. Is this something the community wants? Would it be stepping on anyone's toes? If this is something the community wants, what features are desired for the application?

If this is something that the community doesn't feel is needed, is there a tech need that hasn't yet been fulfilled that I can explore? If so, what is it?

Finally, I know this sounds like a project and long term will likely become one but this is in effect a school assignment and as such, I will not be looking for help at this time. If this ends up being done and is popular, I am sure I will end up asking for help in the long run to keep it viable but literally can't under the parameters of the assignment. Thank you all.

Hey Ryan,

Thanks for sharing this, it looks interesting.

What is your target audience/market for this app? I can see several applications for it but wanted to understand that first.

My thought process is technology made by Judges for Judges but that's more for my presentation to the committee than a hard lock. I have to be able to say “This is to solve X problem in that community”. So long as I can say that and back it up, we're good. In the end, its going up on the app store accessible to all so a wider audience appeal isn't a bad thing.

I think the biggest question is: what will this do that MTG Guide doesn't do already? Other than the fact MTG Guide is I think $6 or so.

There's no draft timer on iOs
MTG Guide had promised for a long time to add one to the app

Core Judge App handles most of the things that judges use, I think, but if you can think of a feature or improvement you'd make to Core Judge App, that might be a good place to start brainstorming, if you want your app to be judge-focused.

Well as I noted, this would be an iOS app where Core is not available.

Thats why I'm asking for feedback. Making a free version of Guide could be a decent project but I'd rather it solve a problem in addition to that service.

As an Android user I was not aware Core is not available on iOS.

Perhaps that's the problem you can solve? Make an app like Core for iOS? The developer of Core has put a lot of time and effort and work into it, so I'm not sure if you have the same resources he does, so maybe you can't completely replicate Core, but you can probably do parts of it.

I have this idea very long time, if we can setup an wireless intranet and connect through an app on the phones to get data from WER to this app. for example;
- WER send list of Outstanding Table in this mobile app. judges can check those table during end of round procedure faster.
- This app allow floor judges to enter penalty rather than let scorekeeper read the handwriting from result entry slips. This app should not record the penalty directly but have some kind of desktop app to allow scorekeeper copy and paste to wer.
- this app have a feature to allow floor judge to ask an input of match result from players with signature as well.
- and also allow judges to note table and time extension due to Slow Play, Make Ruling or Deck check.
- and a clock with syncd time remaining of the round plus warning which table with extra time remain.

I think this can help the tournament operation easier and faster.

but if we have too good apps, I afraid that TO can cut 5 judges slot from each GP due to the better technology :p

My understanding is that MTG Guide (for iOs) is like this Core app, just it is not free. It's a couple bucks.

There used to be MTGJudge App for iOS, but it was discontinued a while ago.

Ryan, maybe this link is useful for you:
https://github.com/numegil/MTG-Judge

I still have it installed in my iPhone and use it only for timing drafts.
Although since January MTR updates I have to repeat period between boosters
because it's been modified.
