Interaction of Feather and Karen's Temporal Sundering

A newly (officially) spoiled card, Feather, the Redeemed (Legendary Creature – Angel) reads: “Whenever you cast an instant or sorcery spell that targets a creature you control, exile that card instead of putting it into your graveyard as it resolves. If you do, put it in your hand at the beginning of the next end step.”

If AP controls Feather and casts Karn's Temporal Sundering (KTS) targeting their own creature (KTS reads: “Target player takes an extra turn after this one. Return up to one target nonland permanent to its owner's hand. Exile Karn's Temporal Sundering.” )

Does KTS get returned to APs hand at the beginning of the next end step?

My initial thought is no, because the exile clause on KTS isn't a replacement effect, so the replacement effect on Feather wouldn't trigger since the spell would never head to the graveyard.

614.7. If a replacement effect would replace an event, but that event never happens, the replacement effect simply doesn't do anything.

Is this an accurate interpretation?

Thanks, Steve

Interaction of Feather and Karen's Temporal Sundering

Hi,

Now that we have the Release Notes out, we see we have the following ruling for Feather:

If an instant or sorcery spell's own effect instructs you to exile it or put it anywhere else, it won't try to be put into your graveyard or exiled with Feather's effect, so you won't return it to your hand.

Feather needs the card to try to go to the graveyard while it's resolving in order for its replacement effect to apply. But in the case of the Sundering, that will never happen - it exiles itself as part of the spell's resolution. Since the Sundering will never try to go to the graveyard, Feather's effect will never try to exile it, and the Sundering goes to exile and stays in exile - it will not return to your hand.

Thanks,
Nathan Long
