Doubling season and playing lands

doubling season
vivid crag

Does doubling season double the number of counters of a vivid crag (or any similar land being played for the matter) as it's entering the battlefield if you played the land from your hand? Thanks.

Under current rules, no.

Playing a land is a special action, not an effect (an effect is the result of a spell or ability resolving). Even though its entering the battlefield is replaced by a replacement_effect it's still a special action (underscore intentional here to show that this is a single entity, it contains “effect” but that doesn't make it one; it's still not the result of something resolving). It therefore doesn't match what Doubling Season is looking for and thus isn't doubled.

Note that if Vivid Crag enters the battlefield thanks to an effect, for example Crop Rotation or Primeval Titan, then the counters are doubled.

This interaction is so unintuitive that we've been trying to find a change to the rules that would make the counters double every time, but so far fruitlessly. I won't complaint if you, as head judge of a tournament, decide that Doubling Season gets special permission to double Vivid Crag counters.
