So follow up questions need a new thread, or I have to edit my original post?

I would think that if you don't understand an official answer, you can
ask for clarifications in private. If you want to ask a different
question, try a new thread.

And if I understand it but don't see why a rule doesn't apply to it?

If you go to the IRC channel for #mtgrules at http://chat.magicjudges.org/, someone will surely be able to assist you.

Or, I believe that this forum has a messaging function. Messaging the person who gave you the answer with a follow up question is likely to get you the best explanation (and based on the fact that clarifications have previously been sent out on Rules-L for answers, it might cause an addition to the original thread if the reply was unclear).

I'll go ahead and recommend that for folks, as using IRC for the answer was… awkward. Folks who wanted to answer my question didn't have access to the thread and IRC couldn't handle that much pasted text. I got my answer, but a direct message to Daniel on here wold probably have been simpler and easier.
