Faerie Impostor getting killed w/ trigger on the stack

Faerie Impostor

I'm a bit confused, what happens if in response to the trigger, a player “kills” the Faerie?, can its controller still return a creature to his hand or does nothing happen at all?

You can still return a creature to your hand.

"Do unless you do " offers a choice: you may do or not do it. If you don't do , then you do . As a result, it doesn't matter whether you can do or not; the choice is whether you do .
